My school account works on my educational laptop and on some things in my PC, but logging in to office with my school account always says, "That Microsoft account doesn't exist." I typed it write, and I've logged into this account multiple times.

    Dear Benjamin Wahrer,

If your school account works on your educational laptop and in some Microsoft services, but Office says "That Microsoft account doesn't exist," it suggests that the account itself is likely valid, but there may be an issue with how you're signing in to Office on your PC.

In the meantime, you can try the following:

Step 1: Sign out of all Office applications.

Step 2: Remove any old school or Microsoft accounts from:

    Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts

Settings > Accounts > Access work or school

Step 4: Restart the PC > Go to Windows Settings > Accounts > Access work or school and sign in to Office again using your school account.

Note: Ensure that the email address is typed correctly (please double-check for any typos or errors.)

If the issue persists after trying the troubleshooting steps, since this is your school account, I recommend that you reach out to your school's IT administrator. They can verify that your account exists in the school's Microsoft 365 tenant, confirm that the appropriate Microsoft 365 Education license is assigned, and check for any account or sign-in issues that may be preventing Office from recognizing the account correctly. For reference: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin?

Please understand that as a forum member, I do not have access to your school's Microsoft 365 environment or account information, so I'm unable to verify the account status directly. Your IT administrator will be in the best position to investigate and resolve any tenant-specific issues.

Sign in through Office’s work or school account flow rather than a personal Microsoft-account prompt; the two account types are separate, and a school account can work in school services while a personal-account screen reports that it does not exist.^1^

Sign in to Office on the PC

    1. Close all Office applications.
    2. Open Word or Excel and create or open a document.
    3. Select File → Account. In Outlook, select File → Office Account.
    4. Select Sign In.
    5. Enter the school-provided username and password. If prompted to choose an account type, select Work or school account, not Personal account.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Sign in to Microsoft 365")
    6. Complete any school multifactor-authentication prompt.

Do not try to create a new personal Microsoft account with the school address. A Microsoft work or school account is created and managed by the school and is not synchronized with a personal Microsoft account.^1^

    Test the school account separately

Sign in to the My Account portal using the school account. This portal is specifically for work and school accounts.^3^

    • If that succeeds: the account exists, so return to Word and use File → Account → Sign In. If another account appears there, sign out of it, close every Office app, reopen Word, and select the school account. Closing all Office apps is required to complete an Office sign-out.^4^
    • If that also says the account does not exist: contact the school’s IT/help desk. The account may use a different sign-in name from the visible email address, or it may need an administrator-side correction.

    Checks for the school administrator

Ask the administrator to check the student in Microsoft Entra ID and confirm:

    1. The account exists and is enabled for sign-in.
    2. The correct user principal name (UPN)—the actual school sign-in name—is being used.
    3. The account is not locked and its password is valid.
    4. No multifactor-authentication or Conditional Access requirement is blocking access.
    5. A valid Microsoft 365/Office license is assigned. If licensing is group-based, confirm the student is actually a member and that dynamic-group processing has completed.^5^

The fact that the account works on the educational laptop does not by itself confirm that it has an Office desktop-app license for the personal PC. The school administrator must verify that assignment and whether school policy permits Office activation on that device.
