How can I use Word on an older Mac running Big Sur?

I just paid for a subscription to Microsoft 365, but it won't run on my older Mac. I am a writer, and all my documents are in Word. I can no longer edit them or even copy them! Help! How can I find a Word product to run on my older Mac, which functions perfectly well. I have no desire--or money--to replace my machine.

Thank you!

Use Word for the web in a current browser on the Big Sur Mac; the desktop version can no longer be updated to the minimum version required for editing and saving.

Edit your documents now

  1. Open the current version of Safari, Chrome, Edge, or Firefox.
  2. Go to Microsoft 365 for the web.
  3. Sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase Microsoft 365.
  4. Select Word, then upload your document from the Mac. Alternatively, upload it to OneDrive first and open it there.
  5. Edit the document in the browser. Changes to files in OneDrive are saved automatically.

Microsoft identifies this desktop behavior as reduced functionality mode: Word can open, view, and print documents, but cannot edit, save, or create them. A Mac must now have at least macOS 12 Monterey and Office 16.83 to receive the required update. If the computer cannot upgrade beyond Big Sur, Microsoft directs users to Microsoft 365 on the web or to another supported device.^1^

Before uploading anything, make backup copies of the original documents in Finder or on an external drive.

Important limitations

Word for the web can edit normal .docx files. For older .doc files, it creates a new .docx copy for browser editing. It cannot open password-encrypted documents, and some desktop features—such as editable headers and footers, advanced page layout, macros, and certain embedded objects—are unavailable or preserved without being editable.^2^

If a document contains important unsupported features:

  • Keep the untouched original as your master backup.
  • Use the web copy only for text edits.
  • Use a supported Mac or PC when desktop-only formatting is required. Your Microsoft 365 subscription permits installation on multiple devices through your Microsoft account.^1^

Why installing an older Word is not the solution

Office 16.77 was the last Big Sur-era release, because Office 16.78 and later require Monterey. However, installing that older build is no longer a durable workaround for the current editing restriction; matching Big Sur cases report that older Office builds now enter read-only mode and cannot be activated for normal editing.^3^

Microsoft 365 currently supports only the three most recent major macOS versions, so Big Sur is outside the supported desktop configuration.^4^

If Apple menu → About This Mac shows that the machine can upgrade to Monterey or later, install that macOS upgrade first and then update Word through Help → Check for Updates. If Big Sur is the newest version Apple offers for this Mac, Word for the web is the supported way to continue editing on that machine.^1^

As the bot suggests, you can use Word for the web in a browser. You could also take a look a Google Docs. It also runs in a browser, but is somewhat more capable than Word for the web and is compatible in file format.

For desktop programs, LibreOffice is open-source and free and has good file format compatibility with Office.

Finally, if you're technically minded, you could take a look at Open Core Legacy Patcher, which allows you to run newer operating systems on older Macs. I use with to run Monterey on a 17" 2011 MacBook Pro, which I love because if its big screen.
