Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Hi Treve,
Thank you for explaining your planned setup.
From a technical perspective, a user may be able to open a SharePoint file in their installed desktop version of Word or Excel by selecting Open in Desktop App. If they sign in with the Business Basic account that has permission to the SharePoint file, they may also be able to edit and save changes directly back to SharePoint. However, this can depend on the SharePoint library settings and your organization’s access policies.
If the file is downloaded to the computer, it should open and edit normally in an activated desktop application. However, it becomes a local copy and will not automatically save back to SharePoint.
External guests may also be able to open a shared file in their own desktop Word application and save changes back to SharePoint, provided that they have edit permission, an appropriately licensed desktop application, and your SharePoint policies allow desktop access. Otherwise, they may need to use the browser version.
Regarding licensing, Microsoft 365 Personal is assigned to an individual Microsoft account, while Microsoft 365 Business plans are designed for organizations and provide centralized administration, shared business services, and organizational controls.
Your proposed setup may work, but Microsoft 365 Business Standard would provide a more straightforward and centrally managed solution if your employees require both SharePoint services and desktop Office applications.
