OneNote online version sync error

I use the online version of OneNote for school, since the desktop version isn't compatible with chromebook (i know...). The last couple of weeks, OneNote has acted up. It has repeatedly decided to erase the last half of the prior day's work when I open my pc the day after. I've tried troubleshooting, looking through page versions, deleted files folders, OneDrive, etc., but nothing has worked thus far.

Have any of you guys had similar experiences, and possibly worked out a solution?

    Hi @Kalle Birk,

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve repeatedly lost parts of your school notes. Since you’re using OneNote for the web on a Chromebook, I’d like to narrow down whether this is related to synchronization or the browser.

Could you please let me know:

    • Which browser are you using, for example Chrome or Edge?
    • Do you notice any sync warning or error before closing OneNote?
    • Does the issue occur with only one notebook, or with other notebooks as well?
    • Is this a regular OneNote notebook or a OneNote Class Notebook provided by your school?
    • If possible, could you test OneNote in an Incognito/InPrivate window and let me know whether the same issue occurs?

Since you have already checked page versions, deleted notes, and OneDrive without finding the missing content, the answers above will provide more information to help narrow down the cause.

Thank you for your time and patience.

What is described matches a notebook sync problem where the latest changes were never fully written back to the cloud. In OneNote for the web, the most useful checks are:

    1. Select the sync error message near the top of the OneNote window.
      • This refreshes the session.
      • If prompted, sign in again with the same school account that owns the notebook.
    2. Open the notebook directly in OneNote for the web again and verify whether the missing content is actually present there.
      • If the notebook cannot be opened in OneNote for the web, that usually points to a server-side issue.
      • If the notebook is stored on SharePoint, the documented next step is to contact the administrator.
      • If it is stored on OneDrive, check the service status for interruptions.
    3. If the notebook opens in OneNote for the web but content is missing, check whether the device where the notes were last edited had fully finished syncing.
      • “Content Not Yet Available” and similar missing-content behavior can happen when a page was added from another device that has not synced yet.
      • If the missing content still exists on another device, copy it into a new page or section there and let it sync again.
    4. If the notebook is visible in the browser but the app session is inconsistent, reopen it from the web location.
      • Open the notebook from OneDrive in the browser.
      • Use Open In OneNote to reconnect the notebook to the app session.
    5. If the issue continues, sign out of all accounts associated with OneNote and sign in again.

Important: avoid signing out, removing, or reinstalling OneNote as a first troubleshooting step when sync problems exist, because Microsoft warns this can cause data loss.

For a school notebook, if it is stored on SharePoint and the problem keeps happening, the supported escalation path is the school administrator.
