Microsoft on-premises server product that runs Office Online.
Use Word’s separate Advanced Find interface to search for TEACHER without closing Word or the document; the exact steps depend on whether you use Windows, macOS, or Word for the web.
Word for Windows
- Press Ctrl+H.
- Select the Find tab.
- In Find what, delete any existing text and enter TEACHER.
- Select Find Next.
Alternatively, choose Find in → Main Document to search the entire document and display the number of matches.^1^
This bypasses the Navigation Pane’s stale search state while keeping the document open. Normally, the Windows Navigation Pane searches for the text currently entered at the top of the pane.^2^
Word for Mac
- Select View → Navigation Pane.
- Select the magnifying glass in the pane.
- Select Settings → Advanced Find & Replace.
- Enter TEACHER in Find What, and then select Find Next.^3^
Word for the web or Office Online Server
- In Search in document, select the X to clear the old search.
- Enter TEACHER again. Word for the web should begin searching as text is entered.^4^
- If the stale search remains, use Home → Find to reopen the search interface.^5^
The closest published community workaround for resetting the Navigation Pane itself requires clearing the old term, pressing Esc, closing the pane, and then saving, closing, and reopening the document.^6^ Because that conflicts with the requirement to keep the document open, Advanced Find is the appropriate in-session workaround; closing and reopening only the pane is not established as a reliable reset.
