When search in navigation pane stiff finding previous, not recent

In Microsoft Word, when I previously searched for “STUDENT” and then entered “TEACHER” in the Navigation Pane’s Find box, Word continued searching for “STUDENT” instead of the new search term, “TEACHER.” How can I fix this issue without closing Word or my document?

I understand Word keeps showing results for “STUDENT” after you enter “TEACHER.” I recommend trying these steps without closing Word or your document:

Click inside the Navigation Pane’s search box and select the X inside the box to clear the previous search.
Type TEACHER, press Enter, and select the Results tab.
If the old results remain, close only the Navigation Pane, then reopen it through View > Navigation Pane and search again.

If the pane still does not refresh, use Home > Find > Advanced Find in Word for Windows. Enter TEACHER in Find what and select Find Next. This provides another way to search while keeping your document open.

Use Word’s separate Advanced Find interface to search for TEACHER without closing Word or the document; the exact steps depend on whether you use Windows, macOS, or Word for the web.

Word for Windows

Press Ctrl+H.
Select the Find tab.
In Find what, delete any existing text and enter TEACHER.
Select Find Next.
Alternatively, choose Find in → Main Document to search the entire document and display the number of matches.^1^

This bypasses the Navigation Pane’s stale search state while keeping the document open. Normally, the Windows Navigation Pane searches for the text currently entered at the top of the pane.^2^

Word for Mac

Select View → Navigation Pane.
Select the magnifying glass in the pane.
