A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Word for Android cannot directly edit a PDF, so open the converted file in Word for the web or Word for Windows, let Word recover it, and save a new .docx copy.
Recover the converted document
Since repeatedly selecting Fix on Android did not work, move the file to another Word client:
- Store the PDF or converted document somewhere accessible from another device, such as OneDrive.
- Open the file using Word for the web or Word for Windows.
- If Word offers to recover or repair the document, accept the prompt.
- Select Save As and save a new copy in Word Document (
.docx) format. - Open that new
.docxfile in Word for Android.
Microsoft lists PDFs as read-only in Word for Android; they must be updated to .docx before they can be edited. Microsoft also specifically recommends using Word for Windows, Word for the web, or Word for iOS to recover an Android file that contains elements the Android app cannot read, then saving a copy ^1^.
If you still have the original PDF
On a Windows computer with a supported desktop version of Word:
- Open Word.
- Select File > Open > Browse.
- Select the original PDF.
- When Word says it will create and convert a copy, select OK.
- Select File > Save As, choose Word Document (
.docx), and save it. - Open the resulting
.docxon Android.
This conversion works best for PDFs containing mostly text. Scanned pages, complex layouts, or copier-style documents may not convert cleanly, and line or page breaks can change ^2^.
If the PDF originally came from Word or another Office application, editing the original Office file and saving a fresh copy is preferable to converting the PDF back into Word ^3^.
