I am a Microsoft 365 Family subscriber and I manage a Microsoft child account for my 7-year-old son through Microsoft Family Safety.

My son needs to attend school classes using Microsoft Teams. Unfortunately, his school does not provide Microsoft 365 Education or Teams school accounts and requires students to join using personal Microsoft accounts.

When my son joins a Teams meeting using his own Microsoft account, he receives the following message:

"Your camera and microphone aren't available due to age restrictions in SA recorded calls and meetings."

As a result, he cannot unmute his microphone or use his camera during lessons. This makes it difficult for him to participate in class.

I have already:

  • Added him to my Microsoft Family.
  • Completed parental consent requirements.
  • Confirmed that his Microsoft account is active and working.
  • Verified that the device microphone and camera permissions are enabled.

Could you please clarify:

  1. Is this restriction expected for child accounts in Saudi Arabia?
  2. Is there a way for a parent to approve or override this restriction for educational use?
  3. Are there any additional parental consent or account settings required?
  4. If this is a regional policy, what is the recommended solution for children who must use Teams for school but do not have school-issued Microsoft accounts?

Please advise on the best way to allow my son to participate in his online classes using his own Microsoft account.I am a Microsoft 365 Family subscriber and I manage a Microsoft child account for my 7-year-old son through Microsoft Family Safety.

    Hello,

Unfortunately, this appears to be an age restriction imposed by Microsoft Teams, rather than an issue with your camera, microphone, or Family Safety settings.

According to Microsoft, when a minor participates in a recorded Teams personal meeting, their microphone and camera may be disabled due to privacy and compliance policies.

You can refer to Microsoft's official documentation here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/teams/personal/meetings-calls/manage-meeting-and-call-recordings-in-microsoft-teams-personal (I screenshot the relevant section below).

There is no parental consent setting in Microsoft Family Safety that allows you to override this restriction, even if you have already approved your child's account.

I suggest asking the teacher to disable meeting recording, including automatic recording if enabled, then have your son leave and rejoin the meeting to see if his camera and microphone work.

If the school requires meetings to be recorded, you may need to ask whether they can provide a school-managed Teams account or another meeting solution. I can imagine your son is not the only one running into this issue.
