Windows 10 update Oct 2026 fails to boot and to recover

My Windows 10 desktop pc updated yesterday morning 27th October 2026. Failed to boot and after the three restarts started automatic recovery. After several minutes the automatic recovery message disappeared, the keyboard lights went on then off. I was left with just an arrow on the screen. There was very irregular mechanical hard disk activity but the system is on an SSD. The mechanical drive is a D: for data storage only. The Keyboard still responds to capsloc, scrollloc and numloc. I have left it several hours hoping for some recovery but none comes. I tried pressing the shift key and restarting but no longer get the recovery option menu. I had a recovery DVD but that seems to fail to boot. What has been changed and what other tools are there for manually recovering the working system that I had last night?

I can see the ssd drive content via a linux boot via a DVD. So assume the ssd is ok. I have downloaded the media tool and an ISO of windows 10 from MS. Is this the only option to recovery - reloading the whole os and losing all my apps and data and how do I stop the automatic updater destroying things on a daily basis when I go to shut down?

Are you able to force your PC into the recovery environment using these steps:

Start your PC, just as Windows attempts to load (spinning dots), press and hold Power Button for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down

    Do this twice

On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt... etc.

If not, when you start your system, what do you see on the screen, do you initially see the PC manufacturers logo screen, or do you not even see that,

Since the SSD is readable from Linux and the keyboard remains responsive, this sounds more like a failed boot process or corrupted Windows recovery environment than a hardware failure. I would avoid reinstalling Windows immediately.

Boot from a current Windows 10 installation USB, go to Repair your computer → Troubleshoot → Advanced Options, and try Startup Repair, System Restore, or Uninstall Latest Quality Update first. If those fail, open Command Prompt and rebuild the boot configuration using bootrec commands, then check system files with sfc and DISM.

Before making any major changes, back up important data from the SSD since you can already access it from Linux. An in-place repair install is often worth trying before a full reinstall because it can preserve applications, settings, and personal files.

Also, the fact that recovery previously appeared and then stopped working may indicate that the update interrupted or damaged boot configuration data rather than the operating system installation itself.

Thanks for your suggestion. No, the pc claims a Recovery but has no menu; the environment is not inclusive of any manual menu - it just gets on with is Automatic Recovery. I have just tried to load an Iso image to a spare SSD as my pc bios allows USB hard drive, USB floppy drive but no usb port memory stick. The option of burning a recovery DVD is not an option as my drive does not support higher than 4.5GB standard. The PC has tried to take recovery from my mechanical D: drive. I have disconnected this to see if the problem is there. Boot recovery happens and I can then plug in the SATA D drive and all is ok. I await to see if the restart returns the same issue. My original DVD recovery disk is useless because it was created before many of the major automatic updates in W10 post 2006.
