Hello,

for some time now, we've been experiencing an issue where the registry entries for custom protocols in the OneNote app for Office 2024 are no longer working:

“HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Security\Trusted Protocols\All Applications\file:”

“HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Security\Trusted Protocols\All Applications\onenote:”

A warning is always displayed. The only entry that does not trigger the warning is:

“DisableHyperlinkWarning=1”

However, for security reasons, we understandably do not want to use it.

It doesn't matter whether the URLs are listed under “Local Intranet” or “Trusted Sites,” especially since local files are also affected.

However, this had worked before in Office 2016 (unfortunately, I don't remember if it worked in 2021 LTSC).

Anyone else affected?

    Hello @Zacharias Embaxter

Since this is a user-to-user community forum, I can only provide guidance and troubleshooting suggestions based on my experience as a user and the information you have shared.

For the issue you reported, you can try to:

    1. Add the following registry entry to allow the OneNote protocol under Trusted Protocols: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Security\Trusted Protocols\All Applications\onenote:
    2. Add the affected link or location as a Trusted Location within Office:
      • From Office app, go to File > Options > Trust Center.
      • Select Trust Center Settings and navigate to Trusted Locations.
      • Add the relevant link or location and save the changes.

After making these changes, please restart the Office application and test the behavior again.

If the issue persists, I recommend contacting Microsoft Support for further investigation. If you are an administrators, a support request can be submitted through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, please refer to the following Microsoft documentation for available support options: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn. If you are an end user, you can reach out to the admin to raise on behalf.

The Microsoft Support team will have access to internal diagnostic resources, service logs, and additional troubleshooting tools that are not available to community members. They can further investigate the issue and determine whether there are any known workarounds, product fixes, or service-side factors contributing to the behavior.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions or updates regarding the issue.
