Check the same account in Teams on the web, desktop, and mobile first; this determines whether the missing Skype history is merely hidden or unsynchronized, or is no longer stored with the account.
1. Confirm the account type and identity
The recovery path depends on which service you previously used:
- Consumer Skype → Teams Free: Sign in using the exact Microsoft/Skype account that originally contained the chats. Skype chats and contacts were transferred only when Teams Free was accessed with those Skype credentials.
- Skype for Business → work or school Teams: The consumer Skype migration and retention rules do not apply. Your organization controls the Teams account, tenant, and retention policies.
Also check the profile picture/account menu in Teams for another signed-in account or organization. Chats belonging to one account or organization do not appear under another.
2. Compare all Teams clients
Using the same account, check:
- Teams on the web.
- The Teams desktop application, if available.
- The Teams mobile application.
Because reinstalling the mobile app did not restore the chats, do not reinstall it again.
- History appears on the web but not the phone: This is a mobile synchronization or local-app-data issue. Sign out of Teams completely, install any available Teams update, clear Teams app data/cache through the phone’s application settings, and sign back in. Clearing app data signs you out.
- History is missing everywhere: Continue with the account-specific sections below. A client reinstall cannot recover server-side data.
3. Search for hidden conversations
Only three entries appearing in the recent chat list does not necessarily mean the other conversations were deleted.
- Search for a former contact’s exact name.
- Search for a distinctive word from an old conversation.
- Open Messages in the results and filter by person or date where available.^1^
- If the contact appears, open the conversation and send a message to return it to the chat list. On desktop, a hidden chat can also be restored with More options > Unhide.^2^
4. If this was consumer Skype and Teams Free
Microsoft transferred supported Skype chats and contacts when users signed in to Teams Free with their Skype credentials. However, these items were excluded:
- Chats with Teams work or school accounts
- Skype-to-Skype for Business chats
- Chats with yourself
- Private conversations
- Copilot and bot content
Microsoft’s published preservation criteria cover users active in Skype from December 2024 through February 2025 who then used Teams Free before December 1, 2025. For users who did not meet those activity conditions, deletion occurred after June 15, 2026. The Skype export deadline has also passed, so data already permanently deleted under this policy cannot now be restored or exported.^3^
If you met the preservation criteria, used the correct Skype account, and the history remains missing on every client, contact Microsoft Support through the Contact us option in Teams personal support. Support can investigate an account or migration issue, but cannot restore history that has already been permanently deleted.^4^
5. If this is a work or school account
Ask your Microsoft 365 administrator to check:
- Whether you are using the original account and organization/tenant.
- Whether a Teams retention policy covers the affected user, message location, and message dates.
- Whether Teams displays a notice saying older messages were deleted by the organization’s retention policy.
- Whether an account or tenant migration occurred.
Administrators can use Microsoft Purview eDiscovery to determine whether a compliance copy still exists. Such a copy may be available for authorized compliance purposes even though it is no longer visible in Teams, but it cannot be restored to the visible conversation. Messages permanently removed after retention processing are not recoverable.^5^
If no policy or account change explains the loss and the messages are absent from every client, the Microsoft 365 administrator should open a Microsoft support request for a service-side investigation.
