Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Your organization’s Microsoft licensing administrator must verify the Office Professional Plus 2019 entitlement and restore activation through its KMS, MAK, or Active Directory activation system; an individual user cannot verify or renew the organization’s volume licence.
Request reactivation from your organization
Send your IT help desk or licensing administrator:
- A screenshot of Word → File → Account, including Product Information.
- The computer name and the full activation error code, if one appears.
- Whether the computer is still owned or managed by the organization.
- Whether it recently stopped connecting to the organization’s network.
Office Professional Plus is commonly deployed through volume licensing. Volume-licensed Office 2019 supports:
- KMS: Office contacts the organization’s KMS host.
- MAK: An administrator supplies and manages a Multiple Activation Key.
- Active Directory-based activation: A domain-joined computer activates through Active Directory. ^1^
The administrator should sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center and open Billing → Your products → Volume licensing → Download and keys. Access requires the volume licensing administrator role. ^2^
If the organization confirms KMS or Active Directory activation, connect the computer to the organization’s network as instructed and reopen Office. If it uses MAK, the administrator must provide or deploy the correct key—do not purchase an unrelated key from a third-party seller.
Collect the activation status for IT
For a volume-licensed installation, open Command Prompt as administrator and run the commands from the applicable Office folder:
cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office16"
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus
cscript ospp.vbs /act
:: For 32-bit Office on 64-bit Windows, use instead:
cd /d "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\Office16"
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus
Send the output to IT, but redact the computer name and any identifiers before posting it publicly. If /act fails, it displays an error code; an administrator can obtain its description with:
cscript ospp.vbs /ddescr:0xERRORCODE
These commands apply to volume-licensed Office 2019, not Microsoft 365 Apps. The documented ospp.vbs location is Office16 even for Office 2019. ^3^
After IT confirms successful activation, close and restart all Office applications so the displayed licensing status updates.
If this is no longer an organization-managed computer
An organization’s volume licence does not become a personal licence merely because Office was preinstalled. If the organization cannot authorize this device, uninstall Professional Plus and install a legitimately licensed retail Office or Microsoft 365 edition.
If Office was actually purchased personally, open Word → File → Account and sign in with the Microsoft account used for the purchase. Microsoft recommends checking the corresponding Services & subscriptions page; if the Office product is not listed for that account, the account cannot activate it. Also check Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features for conflicting Office installations and remove editions that are not licensed for the computer. ^4^
Office 2019 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so even if activation is restored, the organization should plan migration to a supported Microsoft 365 or Office release. ^1^
