Phone Link sending/receiving texts as attachments

Phone: Oppo Reno 13
Phone OS: Android 16
Messaging App: Google Messages
Computer OS: Windows 11

The Issue:

Not sure what happened but recently all of my texts in Phone Link appear as attachments that read "View this content on your mobile device", even if they're just normal text messages. This happens with both texts that I receive and send out through my phone. Only when I read them on my phone do they appear on Windows Phone Link.

How do I fix the messages so that I can read and respond through my computer? Having to stop working on my computer to pick up my phone every time I get a text is really annoying. I suspect it has something to do with RCS messaging. Is Phone Link incompatible with that?

Disable RCS in Google Messages to make conversations use SMS/MMS, which Phone Link supports on the OPPO Reno 13; Phone Link’s RCS integration is limited to select Samsung devices and networks. ^1^

  1. On the OPPO, open Google Messages.
  2. Tap the profile picture → Messages settings.
  3. Open RCS chats (called Chat features in some versions).
  4. Turn off RCS chats.
  5. Close and reopen Google Messages and Phone Link.
  6. Send a new test message from Phone Link.

New messages should now be handled as SMS/MMS and display normally instead of showing “View this content on your mobile device.” Microsoft documents that Phone Link supports SMS and MMS, while RCS is available only for select Samsung devices. ^2^

Turning off RCS removes RCS features such as Internet-based messaging, read receipts, typing indicators, and some enhanced media handling. Existing affected messages might not be reconstructed in Phone Link, so test with a new message.

If you want to retain RCS

Keep RCS enabled and use Google Messages for Web in a browser instead of Phone Link for conversations. A matching Phone Link/Google Messages case recommends this option when full RCS support is required. ^3^

There is no documented setting that enables Phone Link RCS for the OPPO configuration. Microsoft’s current requirements specify:

  • A select supported Samsung device.
  • A supported mobile operator and location.
  • Samsung Messages as the default messaging application. ^1^

Your OPPO with Google Messages therefore does not meet those requirements.

If SMS/MMS still shows as attachments

After disabling RCS, update both linking applications before resetting anything:

  1. On Windows, open Phone Link → Settings → About → Updates and install any offered update.
  2. On Android, open Link to Windows → Settings → Check for Updates.
  3. Restart the phone, then close and reopen Phone Link.

Microsoft recommends current versions of both applications for content-sync problems. ^4^

If newly created SMS/MMS messages still fail after that, reset and pair Phone Link again:

  1. In Windows Search, find Phone Link.
  2. Right-click it and select App settings.
  3. Select Reset.
  4. Restart Windows and reconnect the phone. This removes the existing Phone Link app configuration and requires pairing again. ^5^

    Hi Dee,

Good day. This could be related to RCS messaging, try to check a few things first. Phone Link has limited RCS support, especially with OPPO phones using Google Messages.

    1. Update both apps. On your PC, open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates. On your OPPO Reno 13, update Google Messages through the Play Store and check for any available updates to Link to Windows.
    2. Check Phone Link settings. Open Phone Link on your PC and go to Settings > Features > Messages. Make sure messaging and MMS attachment options are enabled, if available.
    3. Restart both devices. Restart your PC and phone, then open Phone Link again and check your messages.
    4. Test SMS versus RCS. Send a regular SMS message and see how it appears in Phone Link. Google Messages usually shows "RCS message" in the typing field for RCS chats.
      • If SMS works but RCS messages show as attachments, it's likely an RCS compatibility limitation.
      • If both show as attachments, the issue may be with Phone Link or its connection.

Microsoft's documented RCS support is limited to select Samsung devices, so RCS may not work properly with your OPPO and Google Messages setup.

    Regards,
    Jhun
