Update macOS first and then update Word, because Microsoft documents this exact Mac symptom—files open, but editing and creating files are disabled—as reduced functionality caused by unsupported older OS or Office versions starting July 13, 2026.^1^
1. Update macOS and Word
Since reinstalling twice did not help, do not reinstall again at this stage.
- Save your work and install all macOS updates offered under Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update.
- Restart the Mac.
- Open Word and select Help → Check for Updates.
- In Microsoft AutoUpdate, install every available Office update.
- Restart Word and test both:
- File → New Blank Document
- Editing an existing local document
Microsoft’s required order is to update the operating system first and Office afterward.^1^
If this is an organization-managed Mac, Office also requires the applicable update to avoid reduced functionality; contact the organization’s IT administrator if macOS or Office updates are blocked.^2^
2. If Word remains read-only, check activation
Open Word → About Microsoft Word to identify whether it is Microsoft 365, Office 2024, Office 2021, or Office 2019. Then look in Word for an Unlicensed Product, Subscription expired, Action Required, or activation message.
If one appears:
- Sign out of Word.
- Quit all Office applications.
- Reopen Word.
- Sign in using the Microsoft account that owns the Microsoft 365 subscription or one-time Office purchase.
Office without a valid licensed account can read files but cannot create or edit them.^3^
If activation still fails or Word is using the wrong license, run Microsoft’s Office license removal tool. This removes every Office license stored on the Mac, so first ensure that the purchasing account and password are available.
- Quit all Office applications.
- Download and run the license removal tool from the Microsoft instructions.
- Select Continue, complete the wizard, and select Install.
- Open Word and sign in with the licensed account.
- Restart the Mac after activation succeeds.^4^
3. Check the installation source for a one-time license
This applies only if Word displays a yellow “Action Required: We’ve detected a one-time purchase license” banner or if the license is a perpetual version such as Office 2019 rather than Microsoft 365.
Mac App Store copies of Word require a Microsoft 365 subscription. One-time Office licenses must use Office downloaded directly from Microsoft.^5^
In that case:
- Quit Word and the other Office apps.
- In Finder → Applications, Control-click each Office app and select Move to Trash.
- Download the installer associated with the one-time license from the Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page.
- Install it, open Word, and activate with the account that owns that license.
If Word is fully updated, shows the correct activated license, and still cannot create a blank document, use Contact Us on Microsoft’s Word for Mac known-issues page for account-specific support.^6^
