Embedded PowerPoint Viewer Cannot Advance Slides

As of October 26, 2026, SharePoint-hosted PowerPoint presentations using Doc.aspx?action=embedview load the first slide but users cannot advance to subsequent slides.

The bottom navigation toolbar is missing, and we have tested mouse interaction, Left/Right Arrow, Spacebar, and N. None advance the presentation. The issue also occurs when the Microsoft embed viewer is opened in a separate browser window, so it is not limited to the Canvas iframe.

Multiple users and presentations, and courses are affected. Internal reports today confirm learners can see the first slide but cannot proceed.

We experienced a similar Microsoft embedded-viewer issue in August 2026 when the bottom toolbar disappeared. At that time keyboard navigation still worked. The current issue is more severe because both the navigation controls and keyboard/mouse navigation are unavailable.

Please investigate whether there is a current SharePoint Online/PowerPoint for the web embedded-viewer issue affecting Doc.aspx?action=embedview, and advise whether a supported workaround is available.

Hi Janalee,

Thank you for providing the detailed description and the workarounds you have already done.

Since the issue occurs with multiple users, presentations, and courses, and also happens when the embedded viewer is opened in a separate browser window, it's possible that this could be a service-side issue affecting the SharePoint Online/PowerPoint for the web embedded viewer. However, I have checked the Microsoft 365 Service Health Dashboard, and there is currently no ongoing service degradation affecting the Doc.aspx?action=embedview specifically.

That said, for the best possible assistance, I highly recommend contacting your company's IT department and asking them to raise a support ticket with Microsoft Support through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center for deeper investigation. They have access to backend configurations and can perform a more in-depth investigation. At the very least, they can provide the most effective workaround to ensure your experience remains smooth and secure.

I hope this information helps move the case forward. Should you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to share them in the comment below. I'm very happy to help.

The failure is abnormal embedded-viewer behavior, but no public Microsoft notice currently confirms a global October 26, 2026 incident; have a Microsoft 365 administrator check the tenant-specific Service health dashboard and report the issue there if no advisory appears.

Confirm or report the incident

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center with an account assigned an appropriate admin role.
  2. Go to Health → Service health.
  3. Check Office for the web and SharePoint Online, including:
    • Active issues Microsoft is working on
    • Issues for your organization to act on
    • Issue history
  4. If an advisory matches the embedded PowerPoint symptom, use that advisory for status and restoration updates.
  5. If nothing matches, select Report an issue from Service health. Tenant Service health is more precise than the public status page because it identifies issues affecting the tenant you manage.^1^ ^2^

Include:

  • Exact UTC timestamps and affected tenant
  • A sanitized Doc.aspx?action=embedview reproduction URL
  • Browser and operating-system versions
  • Screenshots showing the missing toolbar
  • A HAR/network trace and browser-console output
  • Confirmation that it affects multiple users, decks, and courses
  • Confirmation that it reproduces outside the Canvas iframe
  • The regression date and comparison with the August 2026 behavior

If Report an issue is unavailable, a Microsoft 365 business administrator can open a support request from the admin center.^3^

Supported temporary bypasses

Because the standalone embed URL also fails, changing iframe attributes or repeating keyboard and mouse tests is unlikely to restore navigation.

  1. Open the presentation through its SharePoint library rather than embedview.
    • Open the document library.
    • Select the presentation normally.
    • Use PowerPoint for the web’s Reading View or Slide Show instead of the embedded-view URL.
    • In Slide Show view, clicking a slide or pressing Spacebar is documented to advance it.^4^
  2. Offer “Open in PowerPoint” or a downloadable .pptx.
    • This bypasses the embedded renderer and uses the desktop application.
    • Microsoft documents the desktop application as the fallback when browser functionality is insufficient.^5^
  3. For courses that must remain usable immediately, publish a static alternative.
    • In PowerPoint for the web, use File → Download As and provide a PDF or JPEG slide set.
    • This preserves access to the content but not transitions, animations, audio, video, or interactive navigation.^4^
  4. Only if a SharePoint page uses the File & Media web part: test the Embed web part with the same presentation. A related first-slide defect has been reported with File & Media, with Embed used as a workaround, but that report is not an exact match for the present Doc.aspx?action=embedview failure.^6^

PowerPoint for the web officially supports embedded presentations and full-fidelity reading, so a viewer that displays slide 1 but provides no functional way to advance is not an intended limitation.^7^ A prior report also documents the closely related disappearance of the embedded SharePoint PowerPoint toolbar, although it has no accepted resolution.^8^
