A powerful email and collaboration platform developed by Microsoft, designed to support enterprise-level communication and productivity. Miscellaneous topics that do not fit into specific categories.
An Exchange Online distribution list is not unlimited: it supports up to 100,000 members, and that supported maximum cannot normally be increased.^1^
Exchange Online limits
- 1–4,999 members: No large-group delivery control is required.
- 5,000–99,999 members:
- Configure either Delivery Management to restrict permitted senders or Message Approval/Moderation.
- Maximum message size is 25 MB.
- 100,000 members:
- This is the supported membership maximum.
- Delivery Management or Message Approval is required.
- Maximum message size is 5 MB.^1^
The membership count is calculated after group expansion, including members reached through nested groups. Therefore, splitting the same audience into nested groups does not bypass the expanded-recipient limit.
A distribution group in the organization’s shared address book counts as one recipient against the sender’s per-message and recipient-rate limits. A personal contact group is different: its members are counted individually.^1^
Directory synchronization consideration
For groups synchronized from on-premises Active Directory:
- Microsoft Entra DirSync can synchronize up to 15,000 members.
- Microsoft Entra Connect can synchronize up to 250,000, but Exchange Online’s supported distribution-group maximum remains 100,000 members.^1^
Exchange Server on-premises
For on-premises Exchange Server, 100,000 members is the documented default, and an Exchange administrator can change the applicable organization value. This is distinct from Exchange Online’s supported service limit.^1^
For Exchange Server 2013, an administrator can enable moderation from the Exchange Management Shell:
Set-DistributionGroup -Identity "All Employees" `
-ModeratedBy "Group Moderator" `
-ModerationEnabled $true `
-SendModerationNotifications Internal
Get-DistributionGroup "All Employees" |
Format-List ModerationEnabled,ModeratedBy
The first command enables approval and assigns a moderator; the second verifies the configuration.^2^
These changes require an Exchange administrator and must be run in Exchange Online PowerShell for cloud groups or the Exchange Management Shell for on-premises groups, using commands supported by that environment.
