Phone Link cannot split an iPhone call into independent incoming and outgoing RØDE Connect virtual channels or provide true stereo call audio; it supports a Phone Link-managed Bluetooth call path, while Bluetooth Hands-Free Profile (HFP) carries concurrent playback and capture in mono.
Phone Link lets the PC make and receive iPhone calls while the iPhone is within Bluetooth range, but Microsoft does not document Phone Link as exposing separate caller-output and microphone-input buses to third-party mixers. ^1^
Why Windows forces the call onto one track
A telephone call activates the Bluetooth communications path:
- HFP supports simultaneous mono playback and mono capture.
- On Windows 11, Bluetooth endpoints are unified, and Windows automatically selects HFP when an application opens a microphone or creates a communications playback stream.
- HFP operates at voice-oriented rates—8 kHz narrowband or 16 kHz wideband—not the high-quality stereo path used for media. ^2^
- Bluetooth Classic cannot provide stereo playback while its microphone/capture path is active. ^3^
Consequently, “balanced stereo monitoring” can only mean sending the same mono call signal to both headphone channels. It cannot produce distinct left/right call audio or convert the Phone Link call into a genuine stereo source.
What can be configured
You can test whether the entire Phone Link playback session can be sent to a RØDE virtual output. This does not split the two directions of the call.
- Start or answer a Phone Link call so its audio session is active.
- Open Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, locate Phone Link.
- If Phone Link has an Output device selector, choose the RØDE Connect virtual playback endpoint.
- Leave the RØDE NT-USB Mini selected as the recording/communications device.
- In RØDE Connect, assign that virtual endpoint to one mixer channel and monitor it through the NT-USB Mini headphone jack.
Windows supports assigning an app’s playback session to a different output through Volume mixer. ^4^
For the microphone role:
- Open Settings → System → Sound → More sound settings.
- On Recording, select RØDE NT-USB Mini.
- Select Set Default Communication Device.
- On Playback, select the output that should receive communications audio and set it as the default communications device. Windows provides separate playback and recording communications roles. ^5^
This works only if Phone Link follows the Windows per-app or default communications endpoint. If Phone Link does not appear in Volume mixer, lacks an output selector, or continues using its Bluetooth-managed path, the available Microsoft documentation provides no supported method to force its call stream into RØDE Connect.
Practical limitations
- The caller’s audio may be routable as one complete mono playback stream, but it cannot be separated further by Windows into multiple Phone Link channels.
- Selecting the RØDE virtual output does not make the call stereo; RØDE Connect would need to duplicate the mono signal to both headphone channels.
- Windows’ Volume mixer controls an app’s output, not an independent Phone Link microphone selector. Microphone selection therefore depends on whether Phone Link honors the Windows communications recording device.
- RØDE Connect’s exact virtual-channel behavior is not covered by the available Microsoft documentation, so confirmation of whether its Virtual channel accepts Phone Link must come from RØDE’s documentation or support.
If Phone Link ignores the selected endpoints, submit the limitation through Feedback Hub → Apps → Phone Link; Microsoft identifies that category for Phone Link feedback. ^6^
