For some reason, Edge is only offering to translate to Italian

Hi there.. just what the subject says. If I highlight and right click, the only translation offered is Italian. Italian isn't listed anywhere in my languages (English US, and English UK are the only ones). I did spend some time in Italy, but I cannot seem to find any other settings that may have gotten changed? All locations and languages appear to be set to US and English. Please help :+)

Hi Adam,

Good day. Try to check whether Edge's translation settings are stuck on Italian or whether an extension is interfering.

  1. Open Edge and go to edge://settings/languages.
  2. Under Offer to translate pages that aren't in a language I read, check that the option is enabled. Also, look for Italian in the preferred languages list and remove it if it's there and you don't need it.
  3. Next, open edge://settings/reset and select Restore settings to their default values only if the next check doesn't help. This resets Edge settings, but shouldn't affect your saved favorites or passwords.
  4. If the problem continues, open edge://extensions and temporarily turn off any third-party translation extensions. Then try right-clicking selected text again. You can also test in an InPrivate window to see whether the issue is related to your Edge profile or extensions.

When you right-click selected text, does the menu literally say "Translate to Italian," or does the translation panel open with Italian already selected?

Regards,
Jhun

Edge’s selected-text command can remember the most recently used translation target independently of the languages shown in Windows, so set English once in Edge’s translation panel to replace Italian as the remembered target.^1^

    Change the remembered target

    1. Open a webpage written in a language other than English.
    2. Select the Translate icon in the address bar.
      • If it does not appear automatically, right-click the page and select Translate to….
    3. Open the Translate to menu and select English.
    4. Select Translate.
    5. Highlight some text again, right-click it, and test the selected-text translation.

Microsoft documents that the translation panel’s Translate to menu controls the target language and that page translation normally defaults to Edge’s configured language.^2^

There is no separately documented setting for clearing or locking the target used only by the selected-text context menu. Your time in Italy may explain when Italian was last selected, but Edge’s current location settings do not need to be changed.

If it still reverts to Italian

Since you have already verified the Windows and Edge language lists, do not remove and reinstall those languages. Instead:

    1. Open a different Edge profile and repeat the test.
    2. If English works there, the remembered setting is confined to the original profile.
    3. In the affected profile, open edge://extensions, temporarily disable any third-party translation extension, and test again.
    4. If Edge is managed by work or school, open edge://policy and inspect TranslateEnabled. A disabled policy turns off Edge’s built-in translation features; an unlisted policy means translation is enabled by default.^3^

If the problem persists only in the original profile, record the Edge version from edge://settings/help and whether the same text works in another profile before contacting Microsoft Support.
