Shut down the Surface, unplug it, do not press or glue the screen back into place, and arrange professional service because a physically separating display requires inspection rather than software troubleshooting.
Immediate precautions
- Place the Surface on a stable, nonflammable surface and avoid flexing the lid or applying pressure to the detached edge.
- Do not insert tools or adhesive into the gap. Microsoft warns that opening or repairing a Surface can create electric-shock, fire, injury, and device-damage risks and recommends professional assistance unless the applicable Service Guide is followed by someone with the required skills and tools.^1^
- If the separation increases, the device becomes unusually hot, emits an odor, or the case changes shape, stop using and charging it. Do not attempt to determine the internal cause yourself.
- If the glass is cracked or chipped, avoid touching it because damaged touchscreen glass may be sharp.^1^
Request service
The correct route depends on who owns the Surface:
Personally owned Surface
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices and sign in.
- Register the Surface if it is not already listed.
- Select the device to check its warranty status.
- Choose the device, select Next, and follow the prompts to create a service request. Depending on your region, Microsoft may offer an authorized in-person provider or mail-in service.^2^
- Describe the issue as the display assembly physically separating from the chassis. If the service form classifies it as damage, choose the matching physical-damage issue type. Coverage and charges depend on the warranty, accidental-damage coverage, and inspection results.^3^
Business- or school-owned Surface
Contact the organization’s IT administrator and use its Business or Education Surface service process. Do not create a personal-device repair order unless the organization directs you to do so; Microsoft’s standard online instructions above explicitly apply to personal devices.^2^
Prepare it only if it remains safe to operate
If the Surface can be used without pressure, heat, odor, or worsening separation:
- Select Start, type Windows Backup, open it, and select Back up.
- Wait for the backup to complete.
- Before shipping, remove the power supply, USB/Bluetooth devices, memory cards, dock, headphones, and other accessories unless support specifically asks for them.
The service center erases the device and reinstalls Windows, so complete the backup before shipment if safe.^4^ If operation appears unsafe, leave it powered off and tell support that you could not back it up.
