Windows 11 can use JPEG or PNG backgrounds, so do not convert the images again; place all 10 images in one local folder and select that folder under Settings > Personalization > Background > Slideshow.
Configure the 10-image slideshow
- Create a folder such as Pictures\Minecraft Wallpapers.
- Copy all 10 original JPEG or PNG files into it.
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select Personalize.
- Select Background.
- Under Personalize your background, select Slideshow.
- Select Browse, choose the Minecraft wallpaper folder, and select Choose this folder.
- Choose the picture-change interval and enable Shuffle the picture order if wanted.
With multiple physical displays, slideshow mode displays a different picture from the selected folder on each screen. Windows supports both JPEG and PNG image formats; the earlier advice that JPEG does not work was incorrect.^1^
Assign specific images to specific monitors
If you want each monitor to keep one particular image instead of rotating through all 10:
- In Settings > Personalization > Background, select Picture.
- Select Browse photos and add the images.
- Under Recent images, right-click an image.
- Select Set for monitor 1, Set for monitor 2, and so on.
- Repeat for each monitor.
If one wide image should cover all screens, choose that picture and set Choose a fit for your desktop image to Span.^1^
The per-monitor menu is unavailable when using Windows virtual desktops. Physical displays and virtual desktops are different features: Windows supports separate pictures per physical monitor in Picture mode, but not while multiple virtual desktops are in use.
If none of the images take effect
Because converting to PNG did not help, test the wallpaper mechanism rather than converting the files again:
- Open one image in File Explorer.
- Right-click it and select Set as desktop background.
- If it works, the image is valid; return to Personalization > Background and configure the slideshow.
- If it does not work, open the image in Photos. If Photos cannot display it correctly, export or save a fresh copy as JPEG or PNG from an image editor instead of merely renaming its extension.
If the background becomes solid black, or manual background and slideshow changes are ignored, install current Windows updates:
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available cumulative updates and restart.
Microsoft documented a problem affecting Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1 in which background settings failed to load after an August 27, 2026 update. It was resolved by KB5124008, released September 8, 2026, and later updates.^2^
Check that Windows detects every display
Go to Settings > System > Display:
- Select Identify to show each monitor’s assigned number.
- If a monitor is missing, expand Multiple displays and select Detect.
- Confirm the displays are configured as extended displays rather than duplicated displays.^3^
If the update and direct Set as desktop background test both fail, report:
- Whether the desktop becomes black or remains on the previous image.
- Whether the images appear under Recent images.
- The Windows edition, version, and OS build shown under Settings > System > About.
- Whether this is a personal PC or one managed by a school or employer.
On a managed Windows Pro, Enterprise, or Education device, an administrator can enforce a wallpaper or restrict wallpaper formats, preventing user-selected images from loading.^4^
