My school computer crashed for the 4th time since I started school. Every time it has a windows update it will give that message boot fail. I never used BitLocker codes but all the time I get asked for it. Right now I have been trying to get my computer working but Microsoft is not letting me download Windows 11 so I can finally open my computer. Please help, I am already behind my school requirements. Thanks.

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Thank you for taking the time to explain what has been happening. I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with repeated boot failures, especially when you rely on this computer for school and are already concerned about falling behind.

Based on your description, the immediate issue appears to be the BitLocker recovery screen, rather than the Windows 11 download itself. BitLocker asks for a 48-digit recovery key when it cannot automatically unlock an encrypted Windows drive. Please also be aware that Microsoft Support cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key.

Because this is a school computer, the recovery key may be associated with the work or school account used on the device. If the computer is managed by your school, you may need assistance from the school’s IT department to retrieve the key.

    Recommended workaround

For now, I recommend focusing on recovering the BitLocker key before attempting to reinstall Windows.

    1. On another working computer or phone, open Sign in to your account
    2. Sign in using the work or school account associated with the affected computer.
    3. Select Devices, expand the affected device, and then select View BitLocker Keys.
    4. Compare the Recovery Key ID shown on the locked computer with the available key and use the matching 48-digit recovery key to unlock the drive.

If the recovery key does not appear in the account, please contact your school’s IT department. This is a recommendation contacting the organization’s IT department when an organization-managed device requires a BitLocker recovery key.

Then, after entering the correct recovery key, check whether the computer can start Windows normally.

If you cannot locate the recovery key and the school’s IT department cannot retrieve it, the device will need to be reset using a Windows recovery option if the change that triggered recovery cannot be undone. Please keep in mind that resetting the device in this situation will remove your files, so I would strongly recommend working with your school’s IT department before proceeding, particularly if important schoolwork is stored locally on the computer.

Since this computer has failed to boot several times, having the school’s IT team examine the device after access is restored would also be a good next step. This is especially important for a school-managed computer so that the underlying startup issue can be addressed rather than immediately proceeding with another Windows installation.

I hope this helps you regain access to your computer as quickly as possible and get back to your schoolwork.
