Hello Microsoft Support,

I am following up on support case #7106663694 regarding my genuine Office Home & Student 2019 for Mac licence.

My licence remains visible in my Microsoft account, but Word continues to display "Unknown Error — error code 0x0" during activation.

I have found multiple reports from July 2026 describing the same issue. A Microsoft Q&A moderator stated that Office 2019 for Mac entered reduced-functionality mode on 13 July 2026 because its licensing certificate could no longer be updated.

Could you please confirm whether this certificate issue is the cause of my activation failure?

As I purchased a perpetual licence, I would appreciate written clarification of whether Microsoft has a supported solution for restoring activation, or whether the product can no longer be activated on macOS.

Please also advise whether any alternative remedy is available for my existing purchase.

Thank you.

There is no good news regarding Office 2019, I'm afraid. That version won't run at all on macOS.

To run Microsoft Office on your Mac, you now need an Office license which can install version 16.83 or later and you also need macOS 12 or later. See https://www.brandwares.com/bestpractices/2023/03/most-recent-office-you-can-run-best-practices/ and https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/lifecycle/officeinstall/update-m365-office-macos-ios .

Yes. For Office 2019 for Mac, the July 2026 activation failures with Unknown Error 0x0 align with the documented reduced-functionality change that began on July 13, 2026.

Supported facts from the available guidance:

    1. Starting July 13, 2026, some Office apps on older or unsupported macOS/iOS scenarios can open and print files but cannot edit, save, or create new files.
    2. Microsoft’s macOS guidance for Unknown Error 0x0 / License Not Found says the issue is resolved by updating macOS to at least version 12 and updating Office to the latest version.
    3. That update-based fix does not help Office 2019 for Mac in the reported July 2026 cases, because Office 2019 for Mac no longer receives the newer updates required for the licensing change.
    4. Reinstalling Office 2019 for Mac is not presented as a supported way to restore full activation in those July 2026 Office 2019 for Mac cases.

Based on that, the available guidance indicates:

    • The certificate/licensing-update issue is the cause associated with this activation failure pattern for Office 2019 for Mac.
    • There is no supported self-service fix in the provided guidance to restore full activation for Office 2019 for Mac once this condition occurs.
    • The practical alternatives described are:
      • Use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on the web.
      • Move to a supported version such as Office 2024.
      • Subscribe to Microsoft 365.

For existing files, the guidance states they are not deleted or damaged, but Office 2019 for Mac cannot be restored to full editing mode through normal activation troubleshooting in these cases.
