When I right clicked my Start button, the Shut Down button did not appear in the lower right corner of my Windows 10 Desktop computer.

    Hi Frances,

Are you logged on to a school or work network? Or did this issue happen after installing an app such as Exam Browser?

If none of the above applies, please do the following:

Press Win + R, type regedit.exe and click OK.

Go to the following branch in the Registry Editor.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

If you see one or both of the registry values "NoClose" or "NoLogoff", delete them. You may want to backup the branch first. To do so, from the File menu, click Export... and save it as a .REG file.

If you're unsure, please post a screenshot of above branch in the Registry Editor.

On Windows 10, right-clicking Start does not place a Shut down button in the lower-right corner; select Shut down or sign out, then Shut down from its submenu.^1^

    Other normal methods are:

    • Left-click Start → Power → Shut down.^2^
    • Press Windows key + X → Shut down or sign out → Shut down.
    • Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete → select the Power icon in the lower-right → Shut down.^1^

If the power commands are absent everywhere

If Shut down, Restart, and Sleep are also missing from the regular Start menu and the Ctrl+Alt+Delete screen, a Windows policy may be hiding them. The NoClose policy removes these commands from both locations.^3^

For a personally owned, unmanaged PC:

    1. Press Windows key + R.
    2. Enter regedit, then press Enter.
    3. Back up the relevant key first using File → Export. Incorrect registry changes can cause serious system problems.
    4. Navigate to:
         HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

    5. If NoClose exists and its value is 1, double-click it and change the value to 0. Alternatively, delete only the NoClose value.
    6. Restart Windows and check the power menu again.^4^

If this is a work- or school-managed computer, do not override the policy in the registry. Contact the administrator, because device management or Group Policy may intentionally remove the power options.
