I have a purchased copy of Office for Mac with a perpetual license. Suddenly today, Outlook is offline. I can not go online. Instead I am told to Activate Microsoft 365 which I do not want to use. Why did this happen and how do I turn it off?

Restore Outlook’s perpetual-license activation rather than accepting Microsoft 365; the correct procedure depends on whether the installed Outlook came from the Mac App Store or has damaged activation data.

    1. Confirm the perpetual license account

Sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/services using the Microsoft account originally used to redeem or purchase Office.

    1. Select Install Microsoft 365 or Office.
    2. Confirm that the one-time Office for Mac purchase is listed.
    3. Keep that account and password available for reactivation.

Microsoft’s activation guidance confirms that a one-time purchase can be activated with its associated Microsoft account; a Microsoft 365 subscription is not required when the installed product supports that license.^1^

    2. If Outlook was installed from the Mac App Store

The Mac App Store edition of Outlook requires Microsoft 365 to send and receive email. Perpetual Office licenses work only with Office apps downloaded directly from Microsoft.^2^

A yellow “Action Required: We’ve detected a one-time purchase license” banner is another indication of this mismatch.

    1. Quit Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
    2. Open Finder → Applications.
    3. Control-click each installed Office application and select Move to Trash.
    4. Download the installer matching the purchased release directly from Microsoft:
    5. Run the installer.
    6. Open an Office application and sign in with the account holding the perpetual license.

Do not reinstall Outlook through the Mac App Store afterward.

    3. If Outlook was already installed directly from Microsoft

Reset the saved activation data with Microsoft’s License Removal Tool. This removes local Office licenses from the Mac, but does not cancel or delete the purchased license.^3^

    1. Quit every Office application.
    2. Download the official License Removal Tool: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=849815
    3. Open the downloaded .pkg file.
      • If macOS reports an unidentified developer, Control-click the file and select Open.
    4. Select Continue, then Install. Enter the Mac administrator password when requested.
    5. When removal completes, select Close.
    6. Open Word or Outlook and sign in with the Microsoft account holding the one-time purchase.
    7. If offered multiple licenses, select the one-time purchase/perpetual license, not Microsoft 365.
    8. Restart the Mac after activation succeeds.

The “offline” message in this situation is part of the failed activation state, not Outlook’s ordinary Work Offline setting. There is no separate switch that permanently suppresses the Microsoft 365 prompt while Office remains unlicensed; restoring the compatible perpetual license removes it.

If the purchase is listed online but neither procedure restores activation, use Microsoft’s Office for Mac activation troubleshooting path or contact Microsoft Support with the purchase account and exact Outlook version. Do not post the product key or account details publicly.

What year is your license? Can you please provide that information?
