A PC equipped with advanced AI capabilities and Windows Copilot integration
Your eligible chats should reappear automatically after the updated Copilot app finishes migrating and synchronizing them, but Microsoft has not stated that every missing conversation is guaranteed to return. ^1^
Check the migration and account
- Open Copilot and check the signed-in account.
- Use the same personal Microsoft account previously used for the missing chats.
- If you originally selected Continue with Google or Continue with Apple, use that same sign-in option now.
- Personal and work/school histories remain separate; use Copilot’s account switcher to ensure that you are viewing the right account type.
- Eligible content from linked Google, Apple, and personal Microsoft sign-ins may be consolidated through the Microsoft account during migration. ^1^
- Completely quit and reopen the Copilot app. On the web, refresh the page.
- Read the migration message carefully. If it contains a link for accessing existing chats while they move, use that link. A “coming soon” message means the account has moved to the updated app but its content may still be transferring.
- Check the left-side
Chatslist. Once synchronization finishes, normal chat history appears there. ^2^
Microsoft says migration time varies according to the amount and type of content. Its published troubleshooting page does not provide a manual restore button or forced-migration option.
If you used multiple personal accounts
Accounts can migrate at different times. For each account whose chats are missing:
- Open a new InPrivate/private browsing window.
- Go to https://copilot.microsoft.com/.
- Sign in with that specific personal account.
- Check the result:
- If you remain at
copilot.microsoft.com, that account has not migrated yet, and you can continue accessing it there. - If you are redirected to
copilot.com, the account has moved or is completing its migration. ^1^
- If you remain at
Content that may not return
Microsoft says chat history and most content move to the updated app, but these exceptions apply:
- Group Chat threads, messages, and content are not carried forward after August 18, 2026.
- Podcasts and Deep Research were retired and their content is handled differently.
- Projects were renamed Notebooks; check Notebooks in the left navigation.
- Conversations created as temporary chats never appear in chat history and cannot later be accessed by the user or Copilot. ^3^
The general update documentation confirms that chats, images, and most other created content migrate, while content associated with retired features may not. ^4^
If the chats remain missing
Report the failed migration from Copilot:
- Select … in the upper-right corner.
- Select Send feedback.
- Select Report a problem.
- Include:
- When the chats disappeared.
- The account/sign-in method used—without posting the actual email publicly.
- Device and operating system.
- Whether the migration banner remains.
- Whether the chats are missing on both the web and Windows app.
- A screenshot that contains no personal information.
As a precaution, avoid deleting the account or clearing app data while the migration is unresolved. Those actions are not documented recovery methods and will not force the transfer.
