Microsoft Support must manually review and reactivate the retail Windows 10 Pro license because the old device was removed and the Activation troubleshooter can no longer select it as the source device.
Since Windows 10 Pro is now installed and the troubleshooter has already failed, do not repeat the edition upgrade or hardware-change workflow.
- Open Start, search for Get Help, and open the app.
- Sign in with the same personal Microsoft account used for the 2020 Microsoft Store purchase.
- Enter Windows activation after hardware change — retail Windows 10 Pro digital license; old device removed from account.
- If only automated results appear, enter Billing or Chat with an agent.
- Select Contact Support, then choose Windows and the closest available activation, licensing, or subscription category.
- Choose Chat with a support agent or Call me back.
Alternatively, use Microsoft’s support page, sign in, select Windows, and continue through the self-help prompts until Contact Support or live chat appears ^1^. Microsoft’s activation guidance specifically directs customers to support when reactivation still fails after a hardware change ^2^.
A closely matching case—Microsoft Store retail Windows 10 Pro, motherboard replacement, removed device, and no source device in the troubleshooter—was resolved when Microsoft Support reactivated the license ^3^.
Have this evidence ready
Before starting the chat:
- Sign in to Microsoft Store order history using the account used in 2020.
- Select Payment & billing > Order history.
- Expand the date range under Refine until the Windows 10 Pro purchase appears.
- Open Order details and print or save the page. It should show the order and a status such as Completed or Redeemed ^4^.
- Record the current activation error code from Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
Tell the agent:
- The license was purchased directly from Microsoft Store in 2020.
- It is a retail Windows 10 Pro digital license.
- Windows 10 Pro is currently installed.
- The motherboard, CPU, and RAM were replaced.
- The former licensed PC was reset and removed from the Microsoft account.
- I changed hardware on this device recently finds no eligible device.
- The order number and proof of purchase are available.
- Manual activation or restoration of the digital entitlement is requested.
Replacing a motherboard changes the hardware identity used for activation, so Windows may no longer locate a matching license ^5^. Removing a device is itself a documented step when gifting a PC; it does not establish that the purchase was cancelled or invalidated ^6^. The problem here is that the self-service reactivation workflow no longer has the previous device entry it expects.
If the purchase included a 25-character key in its confirmation email, it can be entered under Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change product key. Microsoft notes, however, that activation may instead use a digital license with no key to enter ^7^. Do not buy another license until support has checked the Store order and existing entitlement.
