A family of Microsoft products that enable users to capture, organize, and reuse notes electronically.
Open “Kamlesh’s Notebook” directly in OneNote for the web using the same personal Microsoft account; this determines whether the problem is limited to the Windows app or affects the notebook’s cloud access.
1. Test the cloud copy
- Open OneNote for the web at https://www.onenote.com.
- Sign in with the personal Microsoft account that owns the notebook.
- Try to open Kamlesh’s Notebook.
Alternatively, in desktop OneNote:
- Select File → Info.
- Right-click the URL displayed beneath the notebook name and select Copy.
- Paste the URL into a browser and open it.
Microsoft recommends this browser test to distinguish a local OneNote problem from a notebook or service-side access problem.^1^
2. If the notebook opens in the browser
The cloud notebook is accessible, so rebuild the Windows app’s connection:
- Confirm that the browser copy contains the latest notes.
- Back up any newer, unsynced pages still visible in the desktop app by copying them to a document or another synced notebook.
- In desktop OneNote, select File → Info.
- Next to the affected notebook, select Settings → Close.
- Return to the browser copy and select Open in Desktop App.
Do not sign out, reset OneNote, clear its app data, or reinstall it before preserving unsynced notes; Microsoft warns that these actions can cause data loss during sync troubleshooting.^1^
3. If the notebook does not open in the browser
Check whether it still exists in the expected OneDrive account:
- Open https://www.onedrive.com and sign in with the same personal account.
- Use Search everything to search for the notebook name.
- Browse folders such as Documents and Notebooks.
- If found, select the notebook to open it in OneNote for the web.
- Check Recycle bin. If the notebook is there, select it and choose Restore.
- If another personal, work, or school account has ever been used with OneNote, check that account’s OneDrive as well.
Microsoft specifically recommends locating notebooks directly in OneDrive and opening them from there.^2^ OneDrive’s recovery guidance also recommends checking search results, the Recycle Bin, and other Microsoft accounts.^3^
If this is actually a notebook shared by somebody else, ask its owner to verify that the account still has permission to view and edit it. Changed or revoked permissions can prevent a shared notebook from opening.^4^
4. Escalate if access fails everywhere
The displayed correlation ID does not by itself reveal the cause to an end user. If the notebook exists in OneDrive but cannot be opened there or in OneNote for the web, contact Microsoft Support:
- Open Microsoft Support and select Get help.
- Describe the issue as: Personal OneNote notebook returns “You can’t access this item” in both Windows and the web.
- Provide the correlation ID, UTC date/time, notebook name, and confirmation that the same account can or cannot access OneDrive.
- Do not post those diagnostic identifiers publicly.
Microsoft’s consumer support page can route personal-account and Office technical issues to the available support option, which may include chat.^5^
