Excel 16.114.1 is not itself outdated; update the Mac to a supported macOS release, then reactivate Excel using the Microsoft account that owns your Microsoft 365, Office 2021, or Office 2024 license.
1. Check and update macOS
- Select Apple menu → About This Mac.
- If the Mac is running anything earlier than macOS 12 Monterey, select Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update and install an available upgrade.
- Restart the Mac, open Excel, and sign in when prompted.
Since July 13, 2026, Office on older unsupported Mac systems can enter reduced-functionality mode: documents open, but editing and saving are disabled. Microsoft requires at least macOS 12 and Office version 16.83; your Excel build 16.114.1 already exceeds the application requirement.^1^
If the Mac cannot upgrade to macOS 12, the installed desktop application cannot be restored through an Office update. Use Excel on the web or install Office on a supported device.
2. Identify the license and reactivate it
In Excel, select Excel → About Microsoft Excel and look for the product name:
- Microsoft 365: Sign in with the account holding an active subscription.
- Office 2021 or Office 2024: Sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase or redeem that one-time license.
- Office 2019: Skip to the Office 2019 section below.
To find the licensed account:
- Open the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page using the account you believe owns Office.
- Select Install Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Confirm that Microsoft 365 or the perpetual Office purchase is listed.
- In Excel, completely quit with Command+Q.
- Reopen Excel and select File → New from Template → Sign In.
- Enter the account associated with the listed license. Office checks that license and activates the application.^2^
If this is a work or school license, the organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator must ensure that a license remains assigned to the account.^3^
If it is Office 2019 for Mac
Office 2019 for Mac cannot be updated to the version now required for supported activation. Its support ended October 10, 2023, and build 16.78 was the final build supporting Office 2019 license types.^4^
Reinstalling Office 2019 will not resolve this reduced-functionality condition. The supported choices are:
- Use Excel on the web.
- Subscribe to Microsoft 365.
- Purchase Office 2024 for Mac as a one-time purchase.
Your existing documents are not deleted by this licensing state.^1^
If a valid supported license is listed but activation still fails
Reset the local Mac licensing data only after confirming that the licensed account credentials are available. This removes every Office license currently stored on the Mac.
- Quit all Office applications.
- Download and run Microsoft’s Office License Removal Tool.
- Open the downloaded
.pkg file and complete the wizard.
- Open Excel and sign in with the licensed Microsoft account.
- Restart the Mac after activation succeeds.^5^
Do not purchase another copy until you have identified the product shown under About Microsoft Excel and checked whether its license appears in the purchasing account.
