Yep - you can. You have the option of using a standalone version of the software. Microsoft no longer sells Publisher as a standalone product on its primary storefront, but you should be able to purchase the Microsoft Office Professional 2021 suite, which is a one-time purchase that includes Publisher alongside the core apps like Word and Excel. You can still find legitimate retail keys from authorized third-party sellers and established tech retailers like CDW or My Choice Software, where prices for the full suite often range between $200 and $400 depending on the specific licensing terms. Some specialized software vendors like Digital License and FastSoftwares still list individual keys for Publisher 2021 specifically, often at a lower price point around $50 to $100, though you should verify their current stock and activation guarantees before buying. Be careful with extremely low-priced "lifetime" deals on unfamiliar sites, as these are often volume licenses not intended for individual resale and may be deactivated by Microsoft later.

Yes—if the disc contains a perpetual (one-time-purchase) edition that includes Publisher, you can install it and use it to open your .pub files, provided it runs on your version of Windows and you can activate the license.

    Install Publisher from the disc

    1. Locate the disc’s product key, usually printed on its packaging or product-key card.
    2. Insert the disc into the computer’s CD/DVD drive. An external USB DVD drive is fine.
    3. If installation starts automatically, follow the prompts and select Publisher if the installer offers a choice of applications.
    4. If nothing happens:
      • Open File Explorer and select the DVD drive.
      • Double-click Setup.exe or Install.exe.
      • Approve any administrator prompt.
Microsoft documents these disc-installation steps here: ^1^
    5. Start Publisher, enter the product key or complete the activation prompts, and then choose File > Open to open a copy of one of your .pub files.

Installing Publisher does not erase your existing files.

    Important checks

    • Look at the disc label to confirm that its Office edition actually includes Publisher. Some Office editions did not.
    • An extremely old Publisher version might not install correctly on a modern Windows computer.
    • The old program must also be new enough to understand the format of your files. For example, Publisher 95 cannot reliably open Publisher 2010 files; simply renaming a .pub file does not convert it.^2^
    • If this is a different computer—or the original computer had a major hardware change—activation might report that the limit has been reached. Eligible one-time-purchase Office licenses may be transferable under their license terms, but transfer can require telephone activation and removal from the old computer.^3^

Preserve the files after opening them

Publisher reaches end of life in October 2026. Microsoft states that a perpetual version can still be installed and used afterward, although it will no longer be supported; Microsoft 365 subscribers will lose access to Publisher.^4^

    Once your files open:

    1. Keep backup copies of the original .pub files.
    2. For documents that only need to be viewed or printed, select File > Save As, choose PDF, and save them.
    3. Keep Publisher installed for files that still need to be edited.
    4. Test several important files before relying on the old installation, because fonts and layout may differ.

If installation or activation fails, the exact Office/Publisher version printed on the disc, your Windows version, and the complete error message are needed to identify the supported recovery option.
