If Microsoft Publisher has already been removed and the file can no longer be opened in Publisher, editing in Publisher is no longer available for Microsoft 365 subscribers after the retirement change. The supported path is to convert or recreate the content in another app.

    Practical options:

    1. If the project only needs to be viewed or shared
      • Use a PDF version of the file if one exists.
      • If Publisher is still available on another device before the cutoff, open the file and go to File > Save as > PDF.
    2. If the project still needs editing
      • Convert the Publisher file by first saving it as PDF.
      • Then open Word and use File > Open to open the PDF.
      • Select OK in the dialog box.
      • Word will open it as an editable document.
      • The converted Word file is optimized for text editing, so the layout can differ from the original, especially for graphics-heavy designs.
    3. If Word is not workable for this project type
      • Rebuild the project in a different Microsoft 365 app based on the document type:
        • Brochures, flyers, ads, business cards, certificates, calendars, cards: Word or PowerPoint
        • Banners, signs, posters: PowerPoint
        • Labels, envelopes, letterhead, newsletters, forms: Word
    4. If there are many Publisher files
      • Bulk conversion to PDF can be automated with the sample PowerShell script.
      • This requires a working and licensed version of Publisher installed on the computer.
      • Test the script on a small set first, because existing output files with the same name will not be overwritten.

    Important details:

    • Microsoft 365 subscribers can use Publisher with current functionality until October 1, 2026.
    • After that, Microsoft 365 subscribers will no longer be able to open or edit Publisher files in Publisher.
    • If there is a perpetual version of Publisher, it can still be installed and used beyond October 2026, although support ends on October 13, 2026.
