If you do not intentionally use a proxy, turn off Windows Manual proxy setup first, then retry the class website.

    1. Check the Windows proxy setting

    1. Open Start → Settings → Network & Internet → Proxy.
    2. Under Manual proxy setup, turn off Use a proxy server.
    3. Close and reopen Edge or Chrome, then reload the class page.

An unintended proxy can redirect browser traffic and cause network- or VPN-related errors. Microsoft’s Windows connectivity guidance specifically recommends disabling manual proxy settings when no proxy is required.^1^

Do not change an automatically configured proxy on a school-managed computer; contact the school’s IT department instead.

    2. Identify whether the problem is the website, browser, or network

    Perform these low-impact tests:

    1. Open another normal website.
      • If other sites also fail, continue to Windows network repair below.
      • If only the class site fails, continue with the remaining tests.
    2. Open the class site in an InPrivate/Incognito window.
      • If it works there, clear the site’s cookies/cache or disable browser extensions.
      • In Edge, use Settings and more → History → Open history page → Delete browsing data. Microsoft also recommends testing another browser to distinguish an Edge problem from a website or network problem.^2^
    3. Test Edge if you normally use Chrome, or Chrome if you normally use Edge.
    4. Connect the PC temporarily to a phone hotspot and retry.
      • Works on the hotspot: the home router, ISP, DNS, or network filtering is implicated.
      • Fails on both networks and browsers: the class site or its access policy is more likely involved.

Restart the browser and PC before proceeding further.

    3. Check whether the school requires its own VPN or registered device

Because this is an online-class service, ask the school or class provider:

    • Does off-campus access require an institution-managed VPN?
    • Must the computer be registered with the school?
    • Must the site be opened using a school account or managed browser?

If an institutional VPN is required, obtain the approved VPN client and configuration from the school’s official IT help desk. Do not install an arbitrary VPN. Some organizational access policies require connection through the organization’s VPN or DirectAccess and may also require device registration.^3^

    4. Repair Windows networking if multiple sites fail

First restart the modem/router: unplug its power, wait at least 30 seconds, reconnect it, and wait for the status lights to stabilize.^1^

    Then:

    • Windows 11: open Get Help and run the Network and Internet troubleshooter.
    • Windows 10: open Settings → Network & Internet → Status → Network troubleshooter.

If the problem remains, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

    netsh winsock reset
    netsh int ip reset
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /flushdns

Restart the PC and test again. These commands reset the Windows network stack, renew the IP configuration, and clear the DNS cache.^1^ Administrator permission is required; on a managed device, ask its administrator.

    5. Use Network reset only as a last step

    Go to:

    • Windows 11: Settings → Network & Internet → Advanced network settings → Network reset
    • Windows 10: Settings → Network & Internet → Status → Network reset

Select Reset now → Yes and wait for Windows to restart. This removes and reinstalls network adapters and resets their settings. You may need to reinstall VPN software or virtual-network software afterward, and known networks may be changed to the public profile.^1^

If none of these resolves it, provide the school’s IT team with the complete error text, the class-site address, whether it fails on a phone hotspot, and whether it fails in both Edge and Chrome.

    Hi,

Which website or application are you using to join your online class? Are you currently using a VPN, or has your school instructed you to use one?

You mentioned uploading an error screenshot, but it isn’t visible here. Please attach it again, hiding any personal information.
