Excel 2016 Copy/Paste Still Failing After KB5002665

After installing KB5002914, we experienced the known Excel 2016 issue where paste operations fail silently (Ctrl+C works, Ctrl+V does nothing, no error message). We have since installed KB5002665, which Microsoft states fixes this issue.

Environment

  • Excel 2016 MSI
  • Version: 16.0.5574.1004 (MSO 16.0.5569.1003) 64-bit
  • KB5002665 installed

Current behavior

  • Issue persists on some legacy workbooks.
  • Ctrl+C shows the moving border.
  • Ctrl+V does nothing.
  • Paste Values / Paste All may work.
  • New workbooks appear unaffected.
  • Running Open and Repair → Extract Data → Recover Formulas improves or resolves the issue for affected files.

Has anyone seen workbook-specific copy/paste failures after installing KB5002665? Could KB5002914 have exposed pre-existing workbook corruption, or is there a known residual issue with certain workbook structures (conditional formatting, styles, named ranges, etc.)?After installing KB5002914, we experienced the known Excel 2016 issue where paste operations fail silently (Ctrl+C works, Ctrl+V does nothing, no error message). We have since installed KB5002665, which Microsoft states fixes this issue.

Hello Muhammed Irfan,

Thank you for the detailed testing.

Since you have already tried the latest KB5002665 revision and the suggested workbook-level checks, there is one newer update worth checking.

Please open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > View installed updates and look for KB5002934. Similar copy-and-paste failures have been reported after this October 2026 Excel 2016 security update.

If KB5002934 is installed, you may temporarily uninstall it, restart the computer, and test an affected workbook again. Before doing so, save a backup of your files.

Please note that KB5002934 is a security update. Removing it should only be used as a short diagnostic test, not as a permanent solution. If copy and paste works again after its removal, submit the result through Excel > File > Feedback > Report a Problem.

You can also contact Microsoft Support and provide your Excel version, the installed update numbers, and the results of this test for more insight. Here how to reach out to support:

Have a nice day.
