How do I leave a Microsoft Family group if the family organizer account has been deleted?

My account is stuck in a family, with parental controls that restrict me. This affects my gameplay in multiplayer games on PlayStation such as Minecraft, and I cannot join friends. I cannot leave the family either, as I am not the family organizer, and I cannot be removed, as the organizer doesn't exist. This has been a trap, and I've spent hours upon hours trying everything to try and resolve this issue. Additionally, Playstation only allows 1 Microsoft account to be connected ever, so making a new Microsoft account isn't an option. Please help me, I've tried everything, and the live chats say they will 'look further' or cannot verify me because I did not provide the organizer's email address (which once again, doesn't even exist anymore.)

If the organizer account was closed within the last 30 or 60 days, reopen it now and use it to remove consent and then remove your account from the family group; if it is permanently deleted, there is no supported member-side removal method and Microsoft Family Safety Support must investigate the orphaned membership.

If the organizer was deleted recently

Microsoft keeps a voluntarily closed account recoverable for the selected 30- or 60-day grace period. After that period, it cannot be reopened.^1^

    1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com and sign in with the deleted organizer account.
    2. Receive and enter the requested security code. This cancels the closure and reopens the account.
    3. Sign in to https://family.microsoft.com with that organizer.
    4. Open the menu beside your member account:
      • If shown, select Remove consent for this child’s account first.
      • Return to the family list, select Remove from family group, and confirm Remove.

Only an organizer can remove a member. For a child account, only the adult who originally granted parental consent can remove that consent.^2^

If the reopened organizer does not show Manage consent or your account, consent was likely granted by another adult Microsoft account. Even a family organizer cannot manage consent that a different adult originally granted.^3^ That original consenting account must be recovered and used for the consent-removal step.

If the organizer is permanently deleted

A member who does not see Leave family group cannot promote themselves or remove themselves. Microsoft documents that the option is unavailable to non-organizers and that only an organizer can remove family members.^2^

Since chat has already failed while requesting the nonexistent organizer address, open a new Family Safety case and state the required account-state problem explicitly:

My Microsoft account is a non-organizer member of a Family Safety group. The only organizer account has been permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. “Leave family group” is unavailable. Please investigate the orphaned family-group membership and parental-consent record attached to my account.

Use Contact Microsoft Support → Get Help → Contact Support, selecting Microsoft account / Family Safety if offered. Microsoft’s Family Safety troubleshooting page identifies this as the escalation route, although support agents cannot reset passwords or directly disclose/change protected account details.^4^

    Include:

    • Your affected Microsoft account address.
    • A screenshot of the family page showing your account and the missing Leave family group option.
    • Confirmation that the organizer account is permanently deleted—not merely inaccessible or pending closure.
    • Any prior support case numbers.
    • Whether you are now an adult and whether the birth date on your Microsoft account is correct.
    • A request to escalate specifically to the team handling Family Safety membership/parental consent, rather than asking to recover or verify ownership of the deleted organizer.

Do not unlink Minecraft from PlayStation or create another Microsoft account as a workaround. Those actions do not remove the Family Safety membership, and Microsoft personal accounts cannot be merged or have game progress, purchases, or gamertags transferred between them.^5^
