External hyperlinks assigned to images are not clickable in Office Online PowerPoint Viewer

Hello,

We are experiencing an issue with Microsoft's Office Online Viewer (view.officeapps.live.com) when displaying PowerPoint (.pptx) files hosted on AWS S3 and delivered through CloudFront.

Issue

External HTTPS hyperlinks assigned to images in PowerPoint slides do not respond when clicked.

  • Hyperlinks for navigation between slides work correctly.
  • External hyperlinks assigned to images do not open.
  • The issue occurs with multiple PPTX files.
  • The issue reproduces when using Office Online Viewer directly, without our application.
  • Both embed.aspx and view.aspx have been tested.
  • The issue also reproduces in Firefox Private Browsing mode.

Our customer reports that these hyperlinks worked previously, but we have not confirmed when the behavior changed.

Investigation

We inspected one affected PPTX file and confirmed that 37 external hyperlink relationships are present in its internal OOXML structure.

We also confirmed that at least one destination URL opens successfully when accessed directly.

DOM inspection showed that a working internal slide-navigation link had an interactive SVG element with cursor: pointer and tabindex="0". In contrast, the affected images had cursor: auto and no tabindex. We could not identify equivalent interactive elements for the external hyperlinks.

This suggests a possible issue with hyperlink hit-area generation or event handling, but the root cause has not been established.

JavaScript errors

The browser console consistently reports:

  • Uncaught ReferenceError: ViewPreview is not defined
  • Uncaught (in promise) ReferenceError: appChrome is not defined
  • HTTP 404 responses for BootViewDS.CloudPolicySettingsHelperInstance.js and BootViewDS.UserPrivacySettingsHelperInstance.js
  • Subresource Integrity (SHA-256) validation failures for these scripts
  • ChunkLoadError: Loading chunk 392 failed

The failing scripts are requested from:

res.public.onecdn.static.microsoft

We have not established whether these JavaScript errors directly cause the hyperlink issue.

Expected behavior

Clicking an image with an external hyperlink should open its configured destination URL.

Actual behavior

Clicking the image does nothing, while internal slide-navigation hyperlinks continue to work.

Questions

  1. Is this a known issue or an intentional change in Office Online Viewer?
  2. Are external hyperlinks assigned to images expected to work in the embedded PowerPoint viewer?
  3. Could the JavaScript loading failures be related to missing hyperlink interaction?
  4. Is there a supported workaround or an estimated fix?

We can provide a reproducible PPTX sample, the viewer URL, screenshots, and browser console logs if needed.

Thank you for your assistance.

I am also encountering the same issue when inserting an external link into text in PowerPoint. This error appeared after the October 20, 2026 incident where the MS online viewer tool failed to load PPTX files (I suspect a recent MS upgrade might be causing these widespread issues).

    Hello s-kusakabe,

Thank you for providing such detailed test results.

Regarding your questions, I could not find any official Microsoft documentation or published incident confirming that this behavior is a known issue or an intentional change in Office Online Viewer. Microsoft documents that PowerPoint supports external hyperlinks assigned to images, but I could not find an official statement guaranteeing that this interaction is fully supported in every embedded view.officeapps.live.com scenario.

The JavaScript loading failures could potentially affect the Viewer’s interactive elements. However, the console errors alone are not sufficient to confirm that they are the direct cause of the missing hyperlink interaction. A Microsoft support engineer would need to review the service-side diagnostics and reproducible sample.

At present, I also could not find an official estimated fix. As a temporary workaround, you may test using a text or shape hyperlink, opening the presentation in PowerPoint for the web or desktop.

Since you have already completed extensive troubleshooting and can provide a reproducible sample, Viewer URL, screenshots, and console logs, I recommend opening a support request through the Microsoft Engage Center.

For detailed instructions, please refer to: Open a new Support request | Microsoft Engage Center

After signing in, go to Help + Support, select the relevant product, describe the issue, and choose Create support request. You can attach the reproducible PPTX sample, Viewer URL, console logs, screenshots, timestamps, and browser details. The Microsoft support agent can collect additional diagnostics and escalate the behavior for product-level investigation if necessary.

Please avoid posting any confidential presentation content, private URLs, access tokens, or customer information in this public forum.

    Kind regards,
