The 44.1 kHz thing is a red herring. Almost every Bluetooth speaker only offers that format, so it’s not what’s wrong. If the playback meter is moving, Windows is sending audio out fine, which means the problem is somewhere between the Bluetooth stack and the speaker. Since you’re on build 26300, which is an Insider preview, a driver or stack bug is a real possibility too.

    Try:

    1. Check for a “Hands-Free” duplicate. Press Win+R, type mmsys.cpl, and look at the Playback tab. If you see both “Volkano Stereo” and “Volkano Hands-Free”, set Stereo as the default and disable the Hands-Free one. Windows sometimes picks the wrong one and you get silence.
    2. Turn off Absolute Volume. This is the classic cause of “connected, meter moves, no sound” with Realtek adapters. Windows and the speaker each control volume separately, and they can end up syncing to nearly zero. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
    reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Bluetooth\Audio\AVRCP\CT /v DisableAbsoluteVolume /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

Then restart your PC, remove the speaker from Bluetooth devices, and pair it again. Also turn up the volume on the speaker itself.

    1. Switch off enhancements and exclusive mode. In the Sound control panel, open the speaker’s Properties. On the Advanced tab, untick both “exclusive mode” boxes. On the Enhancements tab, disable everything.
    2. Restart the audio services. Open services.msc and restart Bluetooth Support Service, Windows Audio, and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
    3. Re-pair from scratch. Remove the speaker in Settings, make sure it isn’t also connected to your phone, power it off and on, then pair it again.
    4. Look at the driver or the build. If nothing above works, the October 2025 Realtek driver may not get along with this Insider build. You can roll it back in Device Manager (Bluetooth > your Realtek adapter > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver), or install the Bluetooth driver for your model from Lenovo’s support site. If the problem began after a recent Insider update, it’s worth reporting in Feedback Hub, or switching to the stable channel if you can.

One quick test that would help: try the speaker with your phone or another PC. If it plays fine there, the speaker is okay and the issue is on the Windows side, most likely step 2 or 6.

Also, do you see both Stereo and Hands-Free listed in your Sound settings? That would tell us whether step 1 is the culprit.

Select the Volkano speaker as the active output device, then set its Bluetooth format to 2 channels, 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality) if the playback meter moves but the speaker remains silent.^1^

    1. Verify audio is routed to the Volkano speaker

    Windows 11

    1. Select the Sound icon on the taskbar.
    2. Open the output-device selector beside the volume slider.
    3. Select the Volkano speaker—not the Surface speakers or a similarly named hands-free device.
    4. Go to Settings → System → Sound → Output and select the Volkano speaker again.
    5. Play audio and raise both the Windows volume and the speaker’s physical volume.

    Windows 10

    1. Select the Sound icon on the taskbar.
    2. Choose the Volkano speaker under Select playback device.
    3. Confirm it under Settings → System → Sound → Choose your output device.

The expected result is that the output meter moves specifically beneath the Volkano device and sound comes from it. Surface audio guidance confirms that Bluetooth accessories must be selected under the Sound Output setting and may have an independent volume control.^2^

    2. Set the documented Bluetooth audio format

The speaker must be connected while changing this setting.

    Windows 11

    1. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices.
    2. Select the Volkano speaker.
    3. Select Advanced sound properties.
    4. Under Output settings → Format, choose 2 channels, 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality).
    5. Test playback again.

    Windows 10

    1. Right-click the taskbar Sound icon and select Sounds.
    2. Open Playback.
    3. Select the Volkano device and choose Properties.
    4. Open Advanced.
    5. Set Default Format to 2 channel, 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality).
    6. Select Apply → OK, then test playback.^1^

    If it is still silent

Work through these in order, testing after each change:

    1. Remove and pair again
      • Windows 11: Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices → Volkano → … → Remove device, then Add device.
      • Windows 10: Settings → Devices → Bluetooth & other devices → Volkano → Remove device, then Add Bluetooth or other device.
    2. Reset Bluetooth
      • Turn Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, turn it on, and reconnect the speaker.
    3. Update the Bluetooth adapter
      • Open Device Manager → Bluetooth.
      • Right-click the Bluetooth adapter—not merely the speaker—and select Update driver → Search automatically for drivers.
      • Restart if prompted, pair the speaker, and test again.^1^
    4. Update the Surface
      • Open the Surface app → Help & support.
      • Check the update status and select Check for updates when offered.
      • Install available Windows, Surface driver, and firmware updates, then restart.^2^
    5. Run Bluetooth diagnostics
      • Open the Get Help app and run the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter.

If the Volkano works with another phone or computer but remains silent on the Surface after these steps, provide the Windows version, Surface model, exact Volkano model, and whether the speaker appears as more than one output device. If it fails on every device, contact Volkano support; Microsoft’s Surface guidance directs unresolved accessory-specific issues to the accessory manufacturer.^2^
