Start the video, then set the browser’s volume and output device in Windows Volume mixer, because the screenshot shows the video and Windows volume controls are already unmuted.
Check the browser’s audio
- Click the Play button in the video.
- Open Start → Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, find your browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, etc.).
- Confirm:
- The browser is not muted.
- Its volume is turned up.
- Output device is set to your laptop speakers or the headphones you intend to use—not an HDMI monitor or disconnected device.
- Reload the webpage and play the video again.
Windows allows each app to have its own volume and output device, independent of the main volume control.^1^
Determine whether it affects only the browser
Play a Windows notification sound, music file, or another video.
- Sound works elsewhere: The issue is limited to the browser or website. Keep the correct browser settings in Volume mixer, then close and reopen the browser.
- No applications produce sound: Check the Windows output device:
- Open Settings → System → Sound.
- Under Output, select the built-in speakers or connected headphones.
- Open More sound settings → Playback.
- Right-click the intended device and select Set as default.
- Select that device in Sound settings and set Audio enhancements to Off.^2^
If there is still no sound anywhere
- Open Start, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Right-click Windows Audio → Restart.
- Right-click Windows Audio Endpoint Builder → Restart.
- Test the sound again.^1^
- Run Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Audio → Run.^3^
If Speakers do not appear under Output, open Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers. Enable the audio device if disabled; if it is missing, use View → Show hidden devices, followed by Action → Scan for hardware changes. If necessary, install the latest audio driver from the PC manufacturer and restart Windows.^4^
