If this started right after renewing Microsoft 365, the most likely causes are that the subscription has not fully activated in the desktop apps yet, the wrong Microsoft account is signed in, or Office is still in reduced functionality mode.

    Try this in order:

    1. Close all Office apps Close Word, Excel, and any other Microsoft 365 apps completely.
    2. Check that the subscription is active Go to Services & subscriptions and sign in with the Microsoft account used to renew Microsoft 365. Confirm the Microsoft 365 subscription shows as active.
    3. Make sure the renewed account is the one signed in to Office Open Word, then go to File > Account and verify the signed-in account matches the account that owns the subscription. Then restart Word.
    4. If the renewal was from a retail box or card, enter the product key A subscription does not start until the product key on the box or card is redeemed, or the link in the email receipt is completed.
    5. If Office still shows subscription or activation notices If Word shows Unlicensed Product or another activation error, follow the activation troubleshooting steps in the Microsoft support article for unlicensed product and activation errors.
    6. If files open but cannot be edited or new files cannot be created Office may be in reduced functionality mode. In that state, documents can still be opened and printed, but they cannot be edited and new ones cannot be created.
    7. If the subscription is active but the app still does not work Restart the computer, install Office updates, and perform an Online Repair of Office.
    8. If the renewal status online is wrong Check the expiration date in the subscription details. If it does not look correct, contact Microsoft Support.

If the subscription was renewed successfully and the correct account is signed in, these steps usually restore editing and document creation.
