Can I resend a fax that did not go through

I have sent a fax and when I came back to work it said it was interruped and had not gone through. Is there a way to resend the fax without starting from scratch?

    Hello @Hurtubise, Judi

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Thank you for your patience, and taking the time to elaborate on your concerns.

Yes, in most cases, you can resend a failed fax without recreating the entire document.

If you are using Windows Fax and Scan, follow these steps:

    Open Windows Fax and Scan.

Select Fax, then open the Outbox.

Locate the interrupted fax and check its status.

If the fax is still queued, use the available Restart or retry option to resend it.

If restarting is unavailable, check whether the original document is saved so you can resend it without starting from scratch.

Before resending, confirm that the fax was not successfully delivered to avoid sending a duplicate.

For more information, see Microsoft's Fax Server Step-by-Step Guide, which explains how to monitor the Outbox and restart failed fax transmissions.

The exact steps may vary depending on the fax software or device you are using.

If the interrupted fax is still in Windows Fax and Scan → Outbox, it may be retried without recreating it; if it has left the queue, Windows does not provide a documented way to reconstruct it automatically.

Check and retry the queued fax

    1. Open Windows Fax and Scan.
    2. Select Fax in the lower-left corner, then open Outbox.
    3. Find the interrupted fax and check its status. Windows uses the Outbox and Fax Status Monitor to show delivery status.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/topic/error-message-when-you-try-to-send-a-fax-in-windows-vista-there-was-an-error-sending-the-fax-f8d6971a-5e33-e0be-0258-c76fc3b1b5a4 "Error message when you try to send a fax in Windows Vista: "There was an error sending the FAX"")
    4. If the fax remains queued, allow the configured automatic retries to run. The Windows Fax Service supports retrying failed transmissions and waiting a configured interval between attempts.^2^
    5. Check the fax’s right-click menu. Some configurations may expose Restart, but Microsoft does not document this as a universal Windows Fax and Scan interface command. The underlying Fax Service does support restarting a failed outbound job after its retries are exhausted.^3^

You can restart only your own fax with normal submission rights; restarting other users’ server-based jobs requires fax job-management permission.^3^

If the job is stuck in Outbox

Restarting the Fax service can release a hung queue, although it is not itself a guaranteed resend operation:

    1. Press Windows key + R.
    2. Enter services.msc, then press Enter.
    3. Right-click Fax and select Restart.
    4. Return to Windows Fax and Scan → Outbox and check the job again.

Administrator permission may be required to restart the service.^4^

If the fax is no longer in Outbox, or no restart option is available, create a new fax and attach the original document again. Before sending, verify the recipient number and that the fax modem or server connection is available.
