\\VM-DESKTOP-K3OL6H\shareee is valid shared-printer syntax, so do not remove the backslashes; verify and re-create that exact share on the host before testing the client again. The Add-Printer cmdlet officially accepts \\printServer\printerName in this form.^1^
1. Verify the queue and share name on the host
On VM-DESKTOP-K3OL6H:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the physical printer, then Printer properties.
- On General, print a test page to confirm the host can print.
- On Sharing:
- Select Share this printer.
- Set Share name to a simple name such as
shareee. - Select Apply, then OK.
- On Security, confirm the intended user or group has Print permission.
The name needed by the client is the Share name shown on this tab—not necessarily the printer’s display name.^2^
2. Separate host access from printer installation
You can browse the host in the screenshot, but test the exact path and authentication from the affected client:
- Press Windows+R.
- Enter:
\\VM-DESKTOP-K3OL6H - If prompted, enter the username and password of an account on the host PC.
- Confirm that
shareeeappears with a printer icon.
Shared printers may require the same account on both PCs or valid credentials for the host.^2^
Interpret the result as follows:
- The host does not open: resolve network/name-resolution access first.
- The host opens but
shareeeis absent: the queue is not shared under that exact name. - The queue appears but connection fails: continue with sharing settings and drivers below.
3. Check sharing settings on both PCs
On both the host and client:
- Open Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings → Advanced sharing settings.
- Under the active network profile, turn on:
- Network discovery
- File and printer sharing
- Ensure both PCs are on the same local network.^2^
After correcting the host share or credentials, connect through:
Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device → Add manually → Select a shared printer by name
Enter:
\\VM-DESKTOP-K3OL6H\shareee
4. If error 0x80070709 remains
Check the driver versions rather than repeatedly recreating the connection:
- Install the printer manufacturer’s current Windows-compatible driver on the host.
- Install the corresponding driver on the client using an administrator account.
- Where possible, use the same driver version on both systems.
- Restart Print Spooler on both PCs:
- Press Windows+R, enter
services.msc. - Right-click Print Spooler → Restart.
- Press Windows+R, enter
Microsoft’s print guidance recommends checking the logical printer, permissions, Group Policy, connectivity, and the client/server drivers. It also documents that Point and Print can require administrator credentials and that client/server driver version differences can trigger installation or update problems.^3^
Do not apply the older Windows XP/Server 2003 policy workaround or disable Point and Print restrictions unless those are actually the operating systems involved. Also, do not use the CNAME registry workaround unless VM-DESKTOP-K3OL6H is a DNS alias rather than the host’s real computer name.
If it still fails, provide the Windows edition/version of both PCs, printer model, whether the host prints locally, and the client/server driver names and versions from Printer properties → Advanced.
