Check Azure Policy → Assignments → Allowed resource deployment regions for the authoritative location list on your subscription; access to university resources is separate and requires the correct university tenant plus an RBAC role assigned by its administrator.
Find the regions allowed for your subscription
There is no single region list that applies to every Azure for Students subscription. These subscriptions commonly have an offer-level Allowed resource deployment regions assignment, and the permitted locations can vary between subscriptions.^1^
- In the Azure portal, search for Policy.
- Select Authoring → Assignments.
- Set the scope to your Azure for Students subscription.
- Open Allowed resource deployment regions.
- Under Parameters, inspect Allowed locations.
Those parameter values are the locations in which that subscription permits deployment. A policy assignment applies at its configured scope and is inherited by child resources.^2^
If a deployment returns RequestDisallowedByPolicy, open:
Resource group → Deployments → failed deployment → Error details
The details identify the policy assignment and definition that blocked it.^3^
Being on the allowed-region list does not guarantee that every service, SKU, or feature is available there. Deployment succeeds only where these overlap:
- Your subscription’s allowed locations
- The service’s supported regions
- Available SKU/capacity and quota
For example, some Azure for Students users cannot deploy Static Web Apps because none of that service’s deployment regions overlap their allowed locations.^4^
The Azure for Students offer provides credit and selected free services, but it does not guarantee unrestricted access to every service, region, SKU, or quota.^5^ Some service-specific limits cannot be increased; for example, Azure for Students is not eligible for AKS quota increases.^6^
If a required exercise has no valid service/region combination, the practical options are:
- Ask the lecturer for an alternative supported service or SKU.
- Ask the university whether coursework is meant to use a university-provided subscription.
- Use or upgrade to pay-as-you-go only if appropriate, after reviewing pricing; usage can incur charges.^7^
Restore access to university shared resources
Your personal Azure for Students subscription does not automatically grant access to resources owned by the university. Azure RBAC grants access through a role assignment consisting of an identity, a role, and a scope such as a subscription, resource group, or resource.^8^
First check the tenant and portal filters:
- Select your profile in the upper-right corner of the Azure portal.
- Select Switch directory and choose the university’s Microsoft Entra tenant.
- Open Subscriptions.
- Select the subscription filter → portal setting → Select all.^9^
- Open the shared resource or resource group and select Access control (IAM) → Check access.
If the university directory is absent, or the resource remains inaccessible, a university administrator must:
- Add or invite your school identity to the university tenant.
- Ensure that you accept the invitation.
- At the intended subscription, resource group, or resource, open Access control (IAM).
- Select Add → Add role assignment.
- Assign the least-privileged role required by the coursework, such as Reader for viewing or an appropriate contributor role for managing the required resource type.
External students can be invited and assigned roles, but the administrator performing this action needs role-assignment permissions such as Owner or User Access Administrator.^10^
If Add role assignment is disabled for you, that is expected unless your account has Microsoft.Authorization/roleAssignments/write at that scope; the university’s Azure administrator must make the assignment.^11^
Provide the administrator with:
- Your school sign-in address
- The exact resource or resource-group name
- The university tenant/directory currently selected
- The full authorization error, including action and scope
- The access required for the exercise
Do not post subscription IDs, tenant IDs, or account details publicly.
