Son's account is locked under an old Family account

I am the parent and legal guardian of a 13-year-old child whose Microsoft account is stuck in a Microsoft Family Safety group.

The family organizer is an old, inaccessible Microsoft account belonging to his older brother. We have no way to access or recover that organizer account.

My son's date of birth is correct, and we have full access to his Microsoft account, including the ability to sign in.

I need assistance removing my son's existing Microsoft account from this family group so I can add him to my own Microsoft Family group.

It is very important that he retains his existing Microsoft account, Minecraft license, purchases, and gaming history.

Is there an account verification or parental consent procedure that would allow me, as his legal guardian, to resolve this without accessing the original organizer account?

    Hello,

Under Microsoft's Family Safety policy, only the family group organizer can add or remove members.

    User's image

If the Organizer account is no longer active, you can use the account recovery form here to recover the account.

Note: If the Organizer account is inactive for more than 2 years, you cannot use the Account Recovery form to recover your account.

In this situation, you’ll need to contact Microsoft Account Support using the link below and ask for help.

    • Go to this page: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/home/contact
    • Type Talk to an agent then click Get Help.
    • At the bottom of the page click Contact Support. Sign in to your Microsoft account if needed.
    • Select Other Products then Billing and Account Profile questions then Confirm.
    • Click Chat with a support agent in your web browser.

Because the original consenting adult’s account cannot be recovered, contact Microsoft Support and request removal of the child account’s existing family-group association without deleting or replacing the child’s Microsoft account.

Microsoft does not document a self-service legal-guardian override: only the adult who originally granted consent can remove that consent, and only a family organizer can remove a member. Even another organizer cannot manage consent granted through a different adult account.^1^

    Escalate the existing account

    1. Open Microsoft’s Contact Support route from the parental-consent page.
    2. Enter Microsoft Family Safety child account stuck in inaccessible family group, select Get Help, and then Contact Support.^1^
    3. Sign in using your own accessible adult Microsoft account.
    4. Give the agent:
      • Your son’s Microsoft account address.
      • Your accessible parent account.
      • The inaccessible organizer account, if known.
      • A screenshot of the current Family Safety group.
      • Confirmation that your son can sign in and that his birth date is correct.
    5. Use this precise request:

The child account is attached to a Microsoft Family Safety group whose only organizer and consenting adult account is inaccessible and cannot be recovered. Please investigate and remove the child from the existing family group or clear the stale family-group/consent association. Do not close, replace, rename, or delete the child’s Microsoft account because it owns Minecraft and other purchases.

A closely matching Microsoft Q&A resolution directs Support to reset the consent/family-group association when no organizer exposes Manage consent.^2^ Support may require account and guardian verification, but Microsoft does not publish a guaranteed verification procedure or guarantee that agents can alter account details; the official support guidance explicitly limits agents from accessing or changing account details.^1^

Preserve Minecraft, purchases, and gaming history

Removing someone from a family group does not delete their Microsoft account.^3^ Continue using your son’s existing account throughout the process.

Do not create a replacement account expecting to transfer the data afterward. Microsoft personal accounts cannot be merged, and game progress, gamertag, purchases, and balance cannot be transferred between accounts.^4^

    Distinguish between:

    • Items owned by your son’s account: keep using that same account.
    • Benefits shared by the old family organizer: removal can end access to shared products or services, including a shared Microsoft 365 Family subscription and shared digital purchases.^3^

After Support confirms removal, sign in to your own Family Safety group, invite the same child account, and complete any new parental-consent prompt. Microsoft states that after consent is removed and the child leaves the old group, the account should prompt for consent again at the next sign-in.^1^
