A desktop publishing application from Microsoft that focuses on page layout and graphic design.
Hello Ida Reynolds,
I understand how concerning it is when Publisher suddenly prevents you from accessing files you still need. The previous answer already covers the main file-location, Safe Mode, add-in, and Office repair checks, so the following information will help narrow down the exact cause.
As one additional check, please confirm the versions of Publisher and Windows:
- In Publisher, select File > Account > About Publisher and note the full product name and version.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
winver, and press Enter to check the Windows version. - Install any pending Office and Windows updates, restart the computer, and test the file again.
Please also confirm:
- Does Publisher open normally to a blank publication?
- Can you create, save, close, and reopen a new
.pubfile? - When you open an affected file, does Publisher freeze, close unexpectedly, or display an error?
- If an error appears, what is the complete message or error code?
- Does this affect every
.pubfile or only files stored on the external drive? - Under File > Account, does the licence show Microsoft 365 or a perpetual version such as Publisher 2021?
These details will help distinguish a damaged-file issue from a compatibility, installation, licensing, or Publisher access issue.
Please share the results and the exact error message, if one appears, and we will help you determine the most appropriate next step.
Please also note that Microsoft Publisher reached the end of its lifecycle in October 2026. Microsoft 365 subscribers may no longer be able to access Publisher on or shortly after October 1, 2026 as the removal update rolls out.
Support for perpetual versions of Publisher ended on October 13, 2026. A perpetual version may continue to run, but it is no longer supported or receiving ongoing fixes. Therefore, the licence and Publisher version shown under File > Account are especially important in this case.
I hope this helps. Please feel free to reply if you need further assistance. I'll be happy to help.
