Hi

I have set up Groups for my class and added members to each group. My students are able to access their Group but I can no longer see them, or access them. When I go to 'Manage Channels' they are listed but are not accessible.

I have tried on my Laptop App, My mobile App and the Web Browser but still no joy.

Since the channels show up under Manage Channels but you can’t open them, it sounds like more than just a hidden channel, especially since you’ve tried the desktop app, mobile app, and browser.

I’d try signing out and back in, then check whether you can access the channels through Teams on the web using a private browser window. It’s also worth asking another owner of the Team to see if they can access the same channels.

    Hello Emmajane,

If the channels are private, as a team owner you can create channels, but you are no longer able to access them because of below reason. When a private channel is created, the owner can still see that the private channel exists within the team, identified by a lock icon, but they cannot access its content unless they are explicitly added as a member of that private channel. The team members who are not part of the private channel will not see it at all.

Even though you are not a team member, as a team owner you can still view limited information about the private channel, including:

    • Private channel name
    • Private channel owner list
    • Private channel last activity time stamp

To be able to manage the private channels, I suggest adding yourself as a member to view these private channels. Here are two methods you can regain access to those private channels:

    • Ask a current member or owner of the private channel to add you as a member.

Once added, ask them to promote your role to Owner inside that private channel.

Navigate to Teams in the left-hand menu. Click on Manage Teams. Search and select the required Team. Go to the Channels tab. Select the desired Private or Shared Channel. Select Add.

Note: To be able to access Teams admin center you must have admin credentials. If you do not have, you can reach out to the IT support team to assist apply this.

In case the solution does not work please provide the following information:

    • Channels which you con not access are they Private channels?
    • Is another teacher or user currently listed as the owner of each private channel so that he can add you as a member?
    • Were the channels recently removed from and then re-added to the parent Team?

With this I can investigate the issue further.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Since the channels are listed in Manage channels but can’t be accessed across desktop, mobile, and web, start with the channel visibility steps and then use the Teams for Education troubleshooting path.

    1. In Teams, open the affected team and check all channels:
      • On desktop: select See all channels under the team.
      • On mobile:
        • iOS: Teams > team name > More options > View channels
        • Android: Teams > team name > More options > Manage channels
    2. If the channels appear there, make them visible again:
      • Desktop: from See all your teams or See all your teams and channels, open the team and select Show next to the channel.
      • Mobile: go to the bottom of the teams and channels list, tap See all teams, open the team, and tap the circle next to the channels to show them.
    3. If this is a class team scenario, check with the institution’s IT admin. In Teams for Education, policies and permissions are often controlled by the IT admin, including access-related issues.
    4. Restart Teams on each platform, then try again.
    5. If the issue continues on all platforms, update Teams. If that does not help, uninstall and reinstall Teams.
    6. If the problem still remains, in Teams select Help > Report a Problem.

A related Teams mobile behavior is that autofavorited channels do not appear until the member signs in to Teams on desktop or web first. If the affected students are missing autofavorited channels on mobile, have them sign in to the desktop or web app first.
