Networking: DNS delay in VNet-injected hosted agent after sandbox start — Behavior and troubleshooting
Problem description
I am experiencing a delay of 5 to 13 seconds after each sandbox start where my private DNS path (UDP to hub firewall) is unavailable, while public TCP connectivity works immediately. This affects the initial DNS queries from each new sandbox, causing the first message of every conversation to be delayed.
Environment
Azure AI Foundry with a hosted agent using VNet injection, located in West ***. The agent is deployed as code with Python 3.13, protocols enabled for responses and invocations, and configured with a dedicated subnet and route table. The network setup includes custom DNS pointing to a hub firewall, with a route table to a Virtual Appliance, and no NSG blocking DNS/UDP/53.
What I've already tried
I compared behavior before and after adding a route table to the agent subnet; the delay was present before the change and became more frequent afterward. I verified that DNS and firewall rules are not filtering UDP or TCP 53, and I have run DNS warm-up at startup. No additional diagnostic outputs or support responses are available beyond the initial description.
Current status
The issue persists with each new sandbox, with a delay during which private DNS over UDP is unavailable, while TCP egress is immediate. I am seeking guidance on whether this behavior is expected for this environment or indicates a configuration or platform issue, and recommendations for mitigating or resolving the delay.
