That problem usually indicates there is a missing codec on your PC, the video is most likely encoded in a codec not natively supported in the Windows Media Player app.

Download the free VLC player form the Microsoft Store, does that video play correctly in that app.

Test one affected file in the newer Media Player or Movies & TV app first; if video works there, repair Windows Media Player Legacy, but if it also remains audio-only, check the video codec and graphics driver.

    1. Identify Windows and isolate the player

    1. Press Windows key + R.
    2. Type winver, then select OK. Note whether it says Windows 10 or Windows 11.
    3. Right-click a video file and select Open with.
    4. Choose Media Player or Movies & TV.
      • If neither appears, open Microsoft Store and search for Media Player by Microsoft Corporation.
      • The current Media Player is built into Windows 11 and is available for Windows 10 through Microsoft Store.^1^

    2. If video works in the other app

The files and system video output are working, so repair Windows Media Player Legacy:

    1. Open Windows Media Player Legacy.
    2. Press Ctrl + M to display its menu.
    3. Select Tools → Advanced → Restore Media Library.
    4. Reopen the player and test a video.

    If that does not help:

    1. Close Windows Media Player.
    2. Press Windows key + R.
    3. Enter: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player\
    4. Delete the files inside that folder, but do not delete the folder itself.
    5. Restart Windows Media Player and test again.^2^

Deleting these database files rebuilds the player’s library; it does not delete the actual videos.

    3. If every app plays audio without video

Check which video codec the files require:

    1. In Windows Media Player Legacy, press Ctrl + M.
    2. Select Help → About Windows Media Player.
    3. Select Technical Support Information. A browser page will list installed codecs.
    4. While a video is loaded, right-click it in the library, select Properties → File, and note the Video codec.

Windows can add support through Microsoft Store extensions for formats including MPEG-2, HEVC/H.265, VP9, AV1, and Web Media.^3^ Install only the extension matching the reported codec.

Avoid general-purpose codec packs from download sites. Microsoft warns that some packs can introduce compatibility problems or system corruption; use Microsoft Store extensions or the codec provider’s official site.^3^

The older “Download codecs automatically” procedure applies specifically to Windows Media Player 11. Use it only if Help → About Windows Media Player confirms version 11:

    1. Select Tools → Options → Player.
    2. Enable Download codecs automatically.
    3. Select OK, replay the file, and accept the codec installation prompt.^4^

    4. If codecs are present but all videos are still blank

    Update the display driver:

    1. Open Start → Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates and install available updates.
    2. Obtain the latest graphics driver from the PC or graphics-card manufacturer.
    3. Restart Windows—use Restart, not Shut down—and retest.

Microsoft identifies current graphics drivers as necessary for video playback. If that fails, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

    sfc /scannow

Restart after the scan completes. Microsoft also recommends the Windows Media Player troubleshooter and, as a final repair, removing and reinstalling Media Features through Control Panel → Programs → Turn Windows features on or off.^2^
