Copilot Studio: How to hide reasoning and tool activity from end users in Microsoft Teams?

We have developed a Copilot Studio agent using the newer Build experience and published it to Microsoft Teams.

The agent uses generative orchestration, Power Automate workflows, and SharePoint connector actions.

Issue:

When employees interact with the published agent in Teams, the interface temporarily displays internal reasoning, thinking summaries, and tool-execution activity while processing their requests.

Once the final response is generated, these details disappear.

We have confirmed this behavior in both Copilot Studio Preview (including End-user preview) and the published Microsoft Teams experience.

Desired behavior:

Employees should see only a generic processing indicator, followed by the final response. We do not want them to see internal reasoning, workflow names, tool calls, or implementation details at any point during processing.

We have already added agent instructions prohibiting the display of internal implementation details, but these instructions do not prevent the temporary activity display.

Questions:

Is there a supported setting in the newer Copilot Studio experience to hide intermediate reasoning and tool activity from end users in Microsoft Teams?

Can this be configured without disabling generative orchestration or changing the underlying model?

Is this behavior controlled by Copilot Studio, the Microsoft Teams client, or the agent's publishing configuration?

If no setting exists, is Microsoft planning to provide this capability?

What is Microsoft's recommended solution that preserves the standard Teams experience without requiring a custom interface?

We want to retain our existing agent, workflows, and Microsoft Teams deployment while providing a clean employee-facing experience.

Please provide specific configuration instructions or current documentation if this is supported.

    Hello @Travis Ostmann ,
At present, there does not appear to be a supported setting in the newer Copilot Studio Build experience that hides the temporary orchestration and tool-execution activity while retaining the standard Microsoft Teams agent interface.

The agent’s instructions control the content of its final response, but they do not control the processing UI shown by the host. This is why instructions such as “do not expose internal implementation details” do not remove the temporary activity display.

Based on the behavior occurring in Copilot Studio Preview, End-user preview, and Microsoft Teams, it is most likely generated by the Copilot Studio runtime and rendered by the hosting client. It is not typically controlled through the agent’s publishing configuration.

    Currently, the practical options are:

    • Continue using the standard Teams experience and accept the temporary activity display.
    • Simplify or disable generative orchestration, although this may change the agent’s behavior and does not necessarily meet the requirement.
    • Build a custom interface using a supported channel or integration where the application controls what is displayed during processing.

There is no known configuration that preserves generative orchestration, workflows, SharePoint actions, and the standard Teams interface while replacing this activity with only a generic processing indicator.

Since internal workflow and tool names may be visible temporarily, we recommend avoiding sensitive information in action, workflow, topic, and connector names. If this behavior is unsuitable for your production deployment, please raise a Microsoft support request or submit feedback through Copilot Studio so the product team can confirm the current behavior and evaluate a feature request for administrator-controlled suppression.

Microsoft’s public roadmap should be monitored for future changes, but a delivery timeline should not be assumed unless Microsoft has formally documented one.

    Hi Travis,

Let me help address each of your questions:

1/ Is there a setting to hide the intermediate activity?

Unfortunately, no documented agent, channel, or publishing setting is available for this. The "End-user preview" control changes the preview mode for makers, but it is not documented as a runtime setting that controls what employees see after the agent is published.

2/ Can this be configured without disabling generative orchestration or changing the model?

There are no documented configuration options. Agent instructions can govern what the model includes in its generated response, but they do not control progress components rendered by the host interface.

3/ Which component controls the behavior?

    The division of responsibility is:

    • The Copilot Studio harness generates the plan and tool-execution events.
    • The channel host, such as Microsoft Teams, renders the progress experience it receives.
    • The final published response is generated separately from those temporary progress elements.

Refer to Use the activity trace to debug your agent (GitHub Copilot) - Microsoft Copilot Studio, it says that the activity trace is updated in real time and can identify actions, tools, connectors, flows, inputs, outputs, and timing.

    4/ Is a capability planned?

Unfortunately, as of now, I could not find a public Microsoft commitment, roadmap entry, or announced delivery date for an administrator-controlled “hide intermediate activity” option.

This is the information I can provide based on the current official Microsoft documentation and may not fully address your concerns. Since my current category primarily focuses on Office 365 products, and your concern relates to Copilot Studio and chatbots, I want to ensure you receive the most accurate and effective assistance. For this reason, I recommend posting your question in the Copilot Studio - Microsoft TechCommunity. In this forum, you'll get the most qualified group of respondents, and other partners who read the forums regularly can share their knowledge or learn from your interaction.

I apologize for redirecting you to a different community, as the members of this category focus on Office 365 concerns and have limited knowledge about Copilot Studio. To help you get quicker and better assistance, I am guiding you to the appropriate resource.

Thank you once again for your precious time and engagement.

No documented maker, publishing, or Teams setting currently suppresses the transient reasoning and tool-activity display for agents created with the newer Build experience, so preserving the unmodified Teams experience requires Microsoft Support to confirm whether your tenant has a preview-specific control or issue.

    What can—and cannot—be configured

    • Agent instructions: Instructions can influence how generative orchestration selects tools, topics, agents, and knowledge and how it creates the final response. They aren't documented as controlling Teams client UI or progress rendering.^1^ Since you already prohibited implementation details in the instructions, no further prompt change is indicated.
    • Generative orchestration: It deliberately creates and executes a plan that can chain topics, actions, connectors, and knowledge sources.^2^ Disabling it would change agent behavior, but the documentation does not identify that as a supported visibility setting.
    • Teams publishing: The documented channel configuration exposes availability, appearance, descriptions, installation, and distribution controls—not a switch for hiding reasoning, workflow names, or tool activity.^3^ Importantly, that article explicitly applies to the standard harness, so it cannot conclusively prove that an equivalent control is absent from every newer-Build/GitHub Copilot harness flight.
    • Model selection: No retrieved documentation ties this display to the selected model or describes changing models as a way to suppress it.
    • Publishing configuration: Republish, channel enablement, and Teams app metadata settings do not document control over transient processing details.

The most supportable interpretation is that orchestration produces runtime activity and Teams renders the corresponding experience. Microsoft’s documentation does not definitively assign ownership of this particular transient in-chat display for the newer Build harness, so it should not be treated as exclusively a Teams-client or Copilot Studio setting.

Also distinguish this transient chat display from the separate Teams Activity tab. Microsoft documents that activity records can include action or tool calls and an optional thought-process explanation, but that is an observability surface rather than a documented control over what appears temporarily in chat.^4^

Open a Microsoft support case and include:

    1. A screen recording showing the transient content and its disappearance after the final answer.
    2. Exact UTC timestamps and affected conversation IDs.
    3. Agent and environment identifiers.
    4. Confirmation that the agent uses the new Build experience/GitHub Copilot harness.
    5. Teams platform and version—desktop, web, or mobile.
    6. Whether every user sees it and whether workflow names or connector/action names are exposed.
    7. A comparison between Copilot Studio Preview, End-user preview, and published Teams behavior.

Ask Support to determine whether this is:

    • Intended behavior for the current harness and Teams experience.
    • A tenant or preview flight.
    • A rendering defect.
    • Controlled by a feature flag or supported configuration that is not yet publicly documented.

Conversation identifiers and timestamps are the information Microsoft Support can use to investigate backend telemetry.^5^

    Interim risk reduction

Until Microsoft confirms a suppression mechanism:

    • Give tools, flows, and actions employee-safe display names and descriptions.
    • Remove secrets, internal URLs, environment names, system identifiers, and sensitive business details from tool metadata.
    • Treat this only as risk reduction; renaming cannot guarantee that all implementation details will remain hidden.
    • Avoid moving sensitive values through conversational output when they can remain within the workflow.

A custom client or middleware that filters outgoing activity could provide stricter presentation control, but no equivalent supported interception point is documented for this newer Copilot Studio harness. It would also replace or wrap the standard channel pipeline, so it does not satisfy the requirement to preserve the unmodified Teams experience.

    Roadmap status

No public Microsoft roadmap item or delivery date in the available Copilot Studio release information announces a “hide reasoning/tool activity” control. Microsoft directs customers to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap for upcoming Copilot Studio capabilities, and notes that features can roll out over several days.^6^ Therefore, no commitment or timeline should be assumed; submit product feedback and track that page and the linked roadmap.
