Storage: Moving Storage Account Fails Due to Hidden Storage Task Assignment

Problem description

I am attempting to move my storage account to a different resource group within the same subscription. The operation fails during validation with the error: 'StorageAccountMoveWithStorageTaskAssignmentsNotSupported' and 'ResourceMoveProviderValidationFailed'. The storage account properties show one storage task assignment, but the assignment list appears empty when accessed through the portal. I need help understanding how to identify and remove this hidden assignment to proceed with the move.

Environment

An Azure Storage account resource in the same subscription, move scenario: from one resource group to another within the same subscription.

What I've already tried

I have checked the storage account properties and the portal link for task assignments; both indicate a single assignment, but the list is empty. I also reviewed public guidance and documentation, which confirm that moving a storage account with existing storage task assignments is not supported unless the assignment is removed first. I attempted to delete storage task assignments via portal and CLI, but the assignment appears to be non-visible or stale. I have not found any visible or accessible storage task resource or assignment related to my storage account.

Current status

Currently, the move is blocked by a validation error related to storage task assignments, despite the portal showing no visible assignments. I am seeking guidance on how to identify and remove any hidden or stale storage task assignments associated with my storage account to enable the resource move.

    Hi @ThierryBrethes-9514

The portal blade is probably just not showing it. Storage task assignments are a sub-resource of the storage account, and you can see and remove them directly with the Azure CLI, which doesn't depend on that blade.

    1. Open Cloud Shell (or a local CLI, version 2.75 or later) and list the assignments with az storage account task-assignment list --resource-group <rg> --account-name <account>. The command comes from the storage-preview extension, which installs itself the first time you run it.
    2. Note the name of the assignment in the output. It may point to a storage task that was deleted or lives in another resource group, which would explain why the portal list looks empty.
    3. Before deleting, check whether that task is still doing something you need (for example tiering or cleanup). If it is, note its settings so you can recreate the assignment after the move.
    4. Delete it with az storage account task-assignment delete --resource-group <rg> --account-name <account> --storage-task-assignment-name <name>.
    5. Run the list command again to confirm it's empty, then retry the move to the new resource group.
    6. After the move, recreate the assignment if you need it.

If the list command also returns nothing while the move still fails, that points to a stale reference on the platform side, and a support case is the right next step.

What does the list command return for your account?

If this resolved your issue, please consider accepting it as the answer. If the CLI doesn't show the assignment either, let me know and I'll be happy to keep helping.
