Using My Student Microsoft 365 Subscription with My Existing Account

Hi,

I previously had a Microsoft 365 subscription linked to my Gmail address ([Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]@gmail.com). When the subscription expired, I purchased a new Microsoft 365 student subscription using my university email address ([Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]@uos.ac.uk - [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]@UOS.AC.UK).

However, my existing OneDrive account, which is linked to my Gmail address, is now showing a storage space warning.

Is it possible to use my new student subscription with my existing Gmail-linked Microsoft account so that I can continue using my current OneDrive storage and files without having to move everything to a new account?

I would appreciate your advice on how best to resolve this.

Kind regards,

    Hi,

I bought the Microsoft 365 subscription myself using my university email, I didnt know I cant do that. When I login to Microsoft subscription refund policy | Microsoft Support using my university email address, no billing or cancellation options appears. How can I cancel this student account now? Can you do it from your side?

    Regards

    Tansu

    Hi Tansu,

Before cancelling anything, you need to confirm whether the subscription shown under your university address is a personal purchase or a licence provided by your university.

Please follow the steps in this article Microsoft subscription refund policy | Microsoft Support and sign in with the university address. Then check the exact subscription name that you bought and check whether you see a renewal/expiration date, a payment amount/payment method, or a Manage or Cancel subscription option

    • If those billing details are available, you can cancel that subscription and then purchase a different Microsoft 365 subscription using your Gmail-based Microsoft account

    • If no billing or cancellation options appear, that subscription is a university-managed Education licence and is provided by your school. It cannot be transferred to the Gmail-based account, but you can still renew Microsoft 365 separately under the Gmail-based Microsoft account. As I said, you normally cannot buy a Microsoft 365 subscription yourself using a school email because the license is managed by the school's administrators.

Thank you for your quick answer.

When I visit this address, I see the email address [[Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]@UOS.AC.UK]. My Gmail account is [[Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]@gmail.com].

If it would be easier, would it be possible to cancel the new Office 365 account I created using my university email address and renew the expired Office 365 subscription linked to my Gmail account instead?

    Hi Tansu,

Thank you for explaining the situation.

Your Gmail account and your university account are two separate Microsoft accounts, each with its own OneDrive storage. Therefore, a Microsoft 365 Education licence assigned to your university account generally cannot be transferred to or used to increase the storage of your Gmail-linked OneDrive.

Also, university email is managed directly by your institution's administrator. The university’s Microsoft 365 administrator controls the account, licence, storage allocation, access, etc., so normally you can't use the school email to purchase a Microsoft 365 subscription yourself.

Please sign in to My Account separately with your Gmail address and your university address, then check the exact subscription name and which account currently owns it. With this information, I can help provide the best next step in your case.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
