    Hello,

Welcome to the Microsoft Windows Community.

Good evening, @ginny van loo . To provide more precise assistance, please let us know the make and model of your printer. In the meantime, if you have already installed the printer drivers for Windows 11, go to Win+i -> Bluetooth & devices -> Printers -> Troubleshoot printer issues, and follow the on-screen prompts.

Clear Use Printer Offline, make the HP printer the default, and cancel any stuck print jobs before resetting or reinstalling the printer.

    Restore the printer’s online status

For Windows 10 and similar earlier layouts:

    1. Turn the printer off, unplug it for 30 seconds, reconnect it, and turn it on.
    2. If it is wireless, confirm from the printer’s display that it is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the computer.
      • If connected by USB, disconnect and firmly reconnect the cable.
    3. Select Start → Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.
    4. Select the HP 7800 printer, then Open queue.
    5. Open the Printer menu:
      • Clear Use Printer Offline.
      • Clear Pause Printing.
      • Select Set as Default Printer.
    6. Delete stuck jobs: select each document in the queue, then Document → Cancel.
    7. Try printing again. These are Microsoft’s documented offline-printer recovery steps for Windows 10. ^1^

On Windows 11, the equivalent location is Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners. Select the HP printer, choose Set as default, open its print queue, select …, and then Cancel all.

    If it remains offline

    1. Restart the Print Spooler

The Print Spooler is the Windows service that manages print jobs.

    1. Search for Services from the taskbar.
    2. Open Services.
    3. Find Print Spooler.
    4. Right-click it and select Restart.
    5. Reopen the printer queue and try printing.

If restarting alone fails, Microsoft also documents stopping the spooler, deleting the files in %WINDIR%\system32\spool\PRINTERS, and starting the service again. Deleting those files removes pending print jobs, not personal documents. ^2^

    2. Remove and add the printer again

    1. Open Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.
      • On Windows 11: Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
    2. Select the HP printer and choose Remove device or Remove, then confirm.
    3. Restart the computer.
    4. Make sure the printer is switched on and connected by USB or to the same Wi-Fi network.
    5. Return to Printers & scanners and select Add a printer or scanner or Add device.
    6. Select the HP printer when Windows finds it.
    7. Open its printer properties and print a test page. Microsoft documents removal, automatic or manual reinstallation, and a test page as the confirmation step. ^2^

    3. Reinstall the correct HP driver if Windows cannot add it

Download a driver for the exact HP 7800 model, your Windows version, and the correct 32-bit or 64-bit system type from HP’s official support site. Install it and restart the computer. Microsoft recommends the manufacturer’s compatible driver when Windows cannot find a suitable one. ^3^

If this is a Wi-Fi printer and Windows still cannot find it after reinstallation, use the printer’s built-in wireless test. A failed test indicates that the printer itself must be reconnected to the home Wi-Fi before Windows can bring it online.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the computer will continue working, but Microsoft no longer supplies free security fixes or technical assistance for it. ^1^
