Hi, I was wondering if there is a way to log in to a remote PC with a given MS Hotmail account so that you can support a user with a task they have on their screen, ideally through a VPN based connection

Yes. For a Windows 11 remote PC, sign in over RDP with the account password, not the Windows Hello PIN. The PIN is a local sign-in method for that device.

If the remote PC is Microsoft Entra joined or Microsoft Entra hybrid joined, Microsoft Entra authentication can be used:

    1. On the local PC, open Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc.exe).
    2. Go to the Advanced tab.
    3. Select Use a web account to sign in to the remote computer.
    4. Enter the name of the remote computer and select Connect.
    5. When prompted, enter the account in ******@domain.com format.

    Important requirements for this method:

    • Both local and remote devices must be on a supported OS level:
      • Windows 11 with KB5018418 or later
      • Windows 10, version 20H2 or later with KB5018410 or later
      • Windows Server 2022 with KB5018421 or later
    • The remote PC must have Remote Desktop enabled.
    • The remote PC must be reachable by hostname. Using an IP address is not supported when using Use a web account to sign in to the remote computer.
    • The remote PC must be Microsoft Entra joined or Microsoft Entra hybrid joined.
    • The local device does not need to be domain joined or Microsoft Entra joined.
    • If Remote Credential Guard is enabled on the local device, turn it off before connecting.

If the goal is simply to connect to a Windows PC remotely, Windows App can also be used to add the remote PC and connect, but the Entra web-account sign-in flow above is the documented path for Microsoft Entra authentication.

For a standard Remote Desktop setup on the remote Windows 11 PC:

    1. On the remote PC, go to Start > Settings > System > About and confirm it is Windows 11 Pro.
    2. Go to Start > Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
    3. Turn on Remote Desktop.
    4. Note the PC name.
    5. From the client PC, open Remote Desktop Connection, enter the PC name, and connect.

If additional users need remote access, add them to the Remote Desktop Users group on the remote device.

    Hello Danny Chauhan,

Yes, you can remotely access another Windows PC to support a user while they are working on their screen, and Microsoft Quick Assist is probably the best solution for your situation.

Quick Assist is built into Windows 10 and Windows 11 and allows you to view the user's screen, request remote control, and troubleshoot problems without interrupting their signed-in Windows session.

    1. On your PC, open Quick Assist (press Ctrl + Windows + Q).
    2. Sign in with your Microsoft account (your Hotmail account can be used).
    3. Select Help someone and share the generated security code with the remote user.
    4. The remote user opens Quick Assist, enters the code, and approves screen sharing.
    5. You can then request control of their PC, which they must approve.

A VPN is not required, because Quick Assist establishes an encrypted connection through Microsoft's service over the internet.

One important distinction: your Hotmail account authenticates you as the support person; it does not automatically grant access to the remote PC, and the user must approve each session.

If you specifically require a VPN-based solution, that would involve a different setup, such as Windows Remote Desktop over VPN, although standard RDP is less suitable for assisting someone on their existing screen.
